Dial-up access obsolete

Thanks to Telkom dial-up enjoyed another ten years in South African when it should have died out long ago.

What is dial up again?

Oh yes, the good old days! I got my first dialup connection in 1995 I think it was. If only I registered a few domains then!

Those figures sound inaccurate and in effect means that iBurst is cheaper than Telkom ADSL. Or am I misunderstanding this?

around 6 weeks ago we had a little wake at work. the death of the modem. we took a decision to no longer ship modems as standard in our computers, replacing them with wlan cards instead.

was a sad day, we all warbled the v90 connection session, and i even think one of the blokes in tech managed to send a fax to another person using his mouth.

Tried installing a modem in my pc the outher day, took me ages to figure out how it works again.

Did a modem work with ip addresses back then, or did it use its own language? :D:D:D

The very first MODEM I had was only 2.4kbps. Mmm... 300 Bytes per second. OK but that was back in 1993 or so. Used it for Beltel. Who remembers Beltel? I remember downloading shareware DOS games for my 286PC on my 20M drive.

Can't use Winfax without a modem so I'll be hanging onto mine for years to come.

As for dialup, came in handy for online banking due to my adsl line being down the other day.

Would it not have been quicker to drive to the bank and ask them to do the transaction, use the internet there?

End of the month in a bank? No thanks, I'd rather do it at a snail's pace.

Hektually, I played some WoW on hy landlord's dial-up the on the weekend, and achieved latencies of 370ms.

VODA's GPRS varies 750ms - 1200ms and MTN's EDGE = 800ms - 3600ms.

LMAO.
*cry*

I used a 2400 for BBS and then when I got 33600 I setup my own BBS - that was fun. I also used my 33600 for internet and later switched over to GPRS/EDGE internet.

Dial-up might be dead but if you simply went from Dial-up to ADSL you did not solve anythings because you are still a c0pp3rwh0r3 and deep inside the belly of the telkom beast.
