Dial-up access obsolete

My dad had a nice modem, got hit by lightning, didnt work for months, then one day he tried dialing up and it worked again.

No idea how to send fax over dsl.

probably need phone number etc.

*fond memories of 14400 modem*

those was the days...

Yes, those external USR ones with all the pretty lights and massive (yet useless) 25pin serial port. My friend had one and it was the modem that gave me my first glimps at the world of BBS as well as the Internet back in 1996.

Any reason why someone can't figure out how to use fax over adsl ?
Cause both sux.

iBurst is cheaper in 30 seconds a day? They must be using that crappy R49 a month deal for that calculation.

Just to prove that dialup isn't completely useless, many years ago I downloaded over 6GB in a year using those R7 calls. It was painful and expensive, but worked quite reliably! Upgrading to ISDN was faster, but so unreliable. You really learned to appreciate every kbps in those olden times. Now, I'm spoiled and only appreciate mbps.

around 6 weeks ago we had a little wake at work. the death of the modem. we took a decision to no longer ship modems as standard in our computers, replacing them with wlan cards instead.

was a sad day, we all warbled the v90 connection session, and i even think one of the blokes in tech managed to send a fax to another person using his mouth.

While dialup is dead as a mainstream form of connectivity there are still areas in the world, including the USA and in SA where dialup is the only way to connect to the internet. Many companies also offer around-the-world dialup connectivity for their employees who travel around, they have a list of numbers for each country to dial in and connect. To remove V90 modems from Laptops kills off any serious mobile business prospects for the laptop.

Tried installing a modem in my pc the outher day, took me ages to figure out how it works again.

Did a modem work with ip addresses back then, or did it use its own language? :D:D:D

thats not a serious question right???? cause actually modems originally spoke Afrikaans (I swear thats why they refer to this off shoot of dutch as "internet protocol"):D:D:D

iBurst 3GB with USB/laptop modem: R469 pm
64kbps after cap.

Telkom DoBroadBand 3GB international: R554 pm.

So which is cheaper. Yes I know you get 30GB local, which I don't use as most sites I use are INTERNATIONAL. Yes Telkom is 4Mbs vs iBurst's 1Mbs but I don't mind waiting a bit longer for a download to finish. On the other hand iBurst gives you full 64kbps after cap, where you can DL about 20GB per month international.

So which is cheaper?.... iBurps obviously.

Dial-up internet access still has its uses so I doubt it will be going anywhere any time soon and neither will modems. I hope like hell our Hayes doesnt die, replacing it would be a mission.
