Diaspora: A new Facebook?

Terrible name. :(

This is the first definition that comes up in most dictionaries (online and off).

the scattering of the Jews to countries outside of Palestine after the Babylonian captivity.

Although I think they meant this one...

a dispersion of a people, language, or culture that was formerly concentrated in one place

i.e. Facebook.

Does that mean you think its a good name, when the first thing that comes to mind is "Jew"? Certainly not gonna sit well with alot of customers...

6 degrees of separation and all that.
Hey! I've heard about that on that facebook group :P

+1 to just another social site. It'll fade into obscurity or be used by a minimal amount of users who just have another stop to make before clicking on their Facebook bookmark.

I actually like that most people don't know about this yet. It means there won't be 100's of people sending invites for **** apps (hug me, farmville, petville etc)

Worse than the definition of the name is its actual sound. Do they think a site most people can't correctly pronounce (without a little practice I assume) could ever take off? "Hey man I saw you on Disp...Dee.....That ****ty D thing the other day".

Just more people looking to try and steal FB's cashcow and who will undoubtedly fall into failure.

the only time people will consider switching is if they can offer something that facebook does not- people will then use the two accounts simultaneously and eventually migrate to one or the other. File sharing, mmorpg, cloud computing etc comes to mind. these are all things that are available as open source alternatives already, just unified into an online social conglomerate
