Diaspora: A new Facebook?

Diaspora is going to fail or become a niche product. 399,900,000 out of 400,000,000 don't care about the politics and privacy issues. Facebook is just a tool for them and it does what they want.

The other 100,000 people are going to get awfully lonely in their little sandbox.

Thats what they said about MySpace too.

I wish them all of the best, but I doubt it will take off. Facebook has a social networking monopoly.

Although doing some reading on it, it sounds pretty cool :) I think i'm gonna join once it launches just to test it out.

Did MySpace ever reach the critical mass of Facebook? I always thought of it as a modern day Geocities for whining teenagers and crappy, no talent bands whereas Facebook is entrenched with all demographics including corporates.

Well it certainly wasn't a niche thing. It was huge in the US and Australia before the time of Facebook. I don't think it took off here in SA because at the time most of us were still running dial-up and this whole social networking thing wasn't really a priority.

facebook is really just a tool to impress people you dont care about anyway.... hey look how great my holiday in fishhoek was...

anyway I only go onto facebook when I have a message, (or to "accidentally" / hunt down some hot chick I went to school with)- I certainly dont care what security issues there are- if someone has found a way to use my wall posts, then all the best to them...

I plan on switching to Diaspora, and hell I plan on taking as many friends as I can with me :D

All it takes is a few people to give a big enough kick to set those dominoes in motion.
 
The fact that it might work on a peer to peer basis is intriguing. What happens when I turn my computer off?

I don't think it's specifically going to be hosted on your own PC, but rather in the net somewhere. However the whole p2p thing comes in with how it functions, your "seed/pod" as they call it, will connect directly with other "seeds/pods" and you control what gets shared between each.

Well at least thats how I understand it.
 
I can't be bothered with Diaspora - there are already 100 - 200 social networking websites and Diaspora will just be the latest one to join.

Same here: from the few MySpace pages I've visited they usually resembled websites built in the early 90's using the Comic Sans font and a dozen misplaced photos of drunk pre-teen sluts thinking they are popular because they have a few 1000 "friends".
 
Most people won't switch networks unless their friends do. Without their friends, the "switcher" would be in social network isolation. Not a place most Facebook users want to be.

sorry Diaspora, but you wont reach the average Joe because 1) He doesn't even know about the privacy issues, 2) if he doesn't know, why would he change
 
The thing is that the more and more the creators are going on about Diaspora and the more details surface, the less and less it starts sounds like a Facebook competitor / i.e. Open social network. It's just sounding like a P2P-based communications platform.

Another problem that faces me is that all my friends and contacts are on Facebook. If adoption doesn't take off on Diaspora, I won't be able to switch to it as a dedicated platform. I'll always be relying on Facebook in the background. This has been pointed out earlier.

But I wish them the best of luck ;)
