Did Telkom underestimate Multichoice?

It's the direct result of a company that doesn't make it's decisions on a competitive market scenarios having to adjust to them.

EDIT: Simpler - That's what happens when a company that is used to having a monopoly enters into a field where it is not the monopoly.

LOL!? Multichoice offers us what we want to watch? Sure. At a disproportionate price. No thanks.

All across the World Media is going online and choice is becoming more important, WebTV pay per view and HD content at your fingertips.

I cant see how Telkom cant see the benefit in this and it will fit their core business nicely.

But I think giving the consumer true choice is just way too difficult for Telkom to swallow, considering that they have been oppressing out market for the last 15 years!

Ag poor telscum is looking at how NeoTel is eating its cake and it thought "Hey, lets do that to MultiChoice" never considering that the reason NeoTel is eating telscums cake is because telscum make it so easy :)

To be entirely fair, DSTV has following issues:

1) Set box rig (hardware) is inadequate and in case of Premium users ridiculously add on expense. For R500 monthly subscription I expect the new set box hardware update as it becomes available with no charge.

2) Broadcast signal is just as inadequate. Rather give me 25 top quality channels content and broadcast wise than 70 really poor ones.

3) Premium service channels, have to be CURRENT! Not 3-6 months behind original broadcasters premier times. This excludes movies as those copy rights are entirely something else. We are living in age of lightning speed communication, and technology advances make anything older than a month OBSOLETE and OLD NEWS ! So put up or put out.

I reckon Telkom were planning to keep ahead by offering triple play first... now that they believe no-one will effectively offer triple play or at least a decent flavour of it, they don't feel threatened and decide it's time to ditch it.

I just think that Telkom don't have a clue how to compete with anybody due to their monopoly...If your whole business plan has centered around "if you don't like it go somewhere else...Oh sorry there is nobody else so ^%$# you consumer" then when there is another option it all falls apart.

Telkom makes money everytime someone uses any of the other service providers, so I think that whenever people say that they are getting a "whipping" or the word "competition" is used Telkom is happy because they think that we are stupid enough to ease off their backs about them being a Monopoly and they can just use that as an excuse for so called competition existing.
It makes absolutely no difference whether you are using mtn, vodacom or any of the other options to view this forum because Telkom's bank account still wins somewhere allong the line.

The reason Telkom Media has failed, is because they started too late to sign contracts with content providers. Multichoice saw it coming, and signed exclusive deals with everybody. So nobody else can get content from anywhere, because everybody is sign in a xx year exclusive contract with multichoice.

This is the reason why we won't have any new noteworthy contenders in the pay-tv market. Multichoice should never have been allowed to sign exclusive contracts, not that you could stop them. If everybody could access the same content, they would have been forced to compete on value added services, like allowing people to choose their channels.

So ICASA proves yet again that they can't regulate anything except their rear end .

To put it to rest, and face the real truth. Telscum is just plainly too *** scared to try and compete, and their is no real mommy to run crying to.

DSTV has all the sport, and that's why nobody has/can/will ever be able to compete with them. For all the people who moan about Anime & Sci-fi there are 50 who care only about sport. Telkom could've had the most awesome & latest sci-fi shows, cartoons, a channel devoted to stand-up, HBO, Comedy Central, show movies fresh off DVD & Apprentice, Survivor, Amazing Race & Idols *live*, they'd still have a helluva tough time getting any traction against Supersport.

Liverpool vs. ManU & Chiefs vs. Pirates will pull bigger ratings than Battlestar & Sarah Connor Chronicles every single time. It won't even be a contest.
