Difference between 2 seagte sata drives?

They're seemingly similar. The ST3160811AS is described on Seagate's site as having "perpendicular recording", which was a big selling point a few months ago. The page for the ST3160812AS makes no mention about perpendicular recording.

Thanks for the info.
Is it an advantage to have perpindicular recording?
So which drive would you choose if you had to buy one?

Probably the ST3160811AS, unless it's R200 more expensive, in which case I'd get the ST3160812AS

thanks for the advice.
I will go for the ST3160811AS, I just gotta find someone with stock, so far digital planet has it for R670 and I have a 10% voucher but apparently their supplier is out of stock.

Drives with perpindicular recording have less platters which means less power is needed to drive the drive ( :) ) which in turn means less heat generated.

Well, in theory anyway.

Thanks
That settles it I will have to go for the ST3160811AS.
Now to find someone with stock and an affordable price.

Thanks again

Interestingly - per the seagate site in your first post the ST3160811AS actually uses more power than the ST3180812AS. Another difference is that the ST3160811AS drive is a reduced height drive at only 19.99mm vs 26.1mm for the ST3160812AS.

The ST3160812AS also seems to have NCQ, which the other doesn't have. Interesting...

I have a 7200.10, which is a 250GB SATA2 HDD with NCQ, Perpendicular recording and 16mb. I also have a 7200.9 drive. If pitted against each other, the 7200.10 comes out tops by quite a way. I'd be looking for that if I were you.
