It's funny, well actually it really isn't, but if you start to consider the wider implications of something like urban tolls, some weird, and in this case rather sad things creep up. The fact that the SPCA will not be able to help as many animals.

That the SPCA applied for exemption and was denied is just plain absurd.

These people have obviously lost their marbles completely now.

Johannesburg - E-toll tariffs will severely impact on the ability of the SPCA to rescue animals, the organisation said on Tuesday.

"We do not receive any funds whatsoever from national or local government and exemption from Sanral [SA National Roads Agency Ltd] was denied," National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) said in a statement.

Spokesperson Christine Kuch said accidents involving animals - overturned trucks carrying animals or vehicles with animals on board involved in accidents - did occur.

The council appealed for exemption in September but this was denied.

It argued that the council was involved in "emergency issues" such as disasters, rescue missions, animal neglect and abuse investigations.

Kuch said rescuing and removing animals from highways was a means of effective accident prevention.

"The NSPCA now finds itself in a position whereby we shall have no option but to use public funds to pay for our vehicles to be allowed onto freeways as we go to assist animals," she said.

"It is ludicrous - if not downright immoral - that our hard-earned cash will be used for the purpose of paying tolls."

These people are frikking nuts. Their greed has no bounds.

I think it truly reflects on the morals of our "government" that the taxi doesn't pay tolls, but the ambulance and fire engine going to rescue the passengers when it rolls because its wheel fell off have to.

Arg sooner or later the wheels on the bus are going to have to stop, this **** is pathetic, how much longer can the TP put up with these bunch of fools...

We are already paying for the roads, why tax us twice?

I really hope this corrupt government gets kicked out of parliament really soon.

Voetsek!!

burn the gantries!!!!

tbh I would do this but I am in Cape Town. Would be piss since I'm a minor as well.

That's how South Africans got things done in the past. Look at the fight against Apartheid and the strikes against speaking Afrikaans as main language. Some things need to burn for life to get better.

The government probably just told the SPCA that they already pay for their own fuel and other costs so why are they only complaining about e-tolls...

So they build these all over Gauteng and incur debt in the process, and now we must pay them road fees to recuperate that debt? Where is the logic? Our highways were just fine without those metal eyesores.

I blame us too. We should have protested the moment they drew up the blueprint instead of waiting until it was all built.

Also the farmers are complaining as they will also be incurring extra costs when transporting their goods.

Gonna be really interesting.

Tollroads MAKE money. They are not there to just pay for the upkeep of the road. Do some research and see how many larger companies and funds have tollroads in their portfolio.
