Diffrence between Gnome and KDE

Do you use gnome/kde to run opensuse in live cd mode/usb?? Or can you run it without them?
 
You are not making much sense in that question...

AFAIK OpenSUSE has always been partial to KDE, but I have not touched SuSE in decades so do not know if they use either Gnome or KDE in the LiveCD.

You do not need a window manager/desktop environment to work with a LiveCD or Linux as such, but for a noob it is going to be tough going to get around anything without a GUI (graphical user interface).

What are you looking at achieving? Why do you not want to use a WM/DE?
 
I prefer the GNOME desktop in Ubuntu 9.10, but that's my preference.

Play around with GNOME and KDE, then decide which one you like best. ;)

AFAICR opensuse comes with both gnome and KDE. You can choose which you want to use at install (or startup if you're running in live mode).

You don't have to use either - they are many many different desktops. My suggestion would be to stick to one of these as they're the most widely-used, and more people will be able to answer any questions you might have.

Gnome is the best.
 
ok thanx. The thing is I want to download opensuse and run it from my usb. It gives me two options gnome or kde. I dont have enough bandwith for the dvd download so I have to choose one of the other. On this page http://software.opensuse.org/112/en. Sorry for all my questions. I really want to use Linux but I have lots to learn first. Want to download both ubuntu and opensuse and then choose the one I like best.

I dont know if it is a valid question but Ubuntu netbook remix does that use gnome?

You know you can download distros using your local bandwidth right (check the stickied thread in this topic)?

To answer your question, Ubuntu Netbook Remix uses GNOME.

If you're looking to migrate to Linux go with GNOME for now. However, if you want mess around go with KDE.

Welcome to the world of Linux...
Will highly recommend you to begin with Ubuntu or Linux mint... You can download the iso (cd images) and then go to

to download a program that will install the Linux iso to your usb from windows...

After that you only need to setup your BIOS so that you boot from your flash first
 
Thanx. I like the fact that you can customise everything in KDE. So am I right in saying that KDE and Gnome are both GUI's? (If that makes sense)

So whatever distro I use I can use either Gnome or KDE with it?

Im still stupid so please tell me how the ftp site works and how do I know what version it is that Im downloading?
 
It does not matter which one you use, as long as it works for you, and you're comfortable using it.

That's all that matters.

Which one is best is not that important. It must work for you, not the other way round. :)

used to be a kde baby myself, gnome is smaller and doesnt get in the way as much now i love gnome.

KDE, Gnome & XFCE are all Desktop Managers (DM). The you get Window Managers (WM) like Openbox, Blackboxs, IceWM etc which I would by the way recommend for older hardware.

Yes, your choices are endless.
 
whichever DE I am using at the time is best. At this present moment that would be both gnome (laptop) and kde4 (desktop). though i'll be trying out e17 on my desktop soon.
 
So in KDE you can customise everything? I played around with Ubuntu netbook remix last night. I now understand why they say it is simple. Just waiting for my Ubuntu cd then I can try both and choose one. Thanx for the input.
 
The netbook remix is simple because it is intended for low end systems like netbooks.

It is configure specifically to make nice with netbooks.

What I would suggest is to get yourself SuSE or Ubuntu and install it, play with it for a month at least to see which one you favour most. Do not just jump around one install after another, you will never have an informed opinion if you do not spend some time with a piece of software.
 
I use gnome because I am used to it, KDE also looks nice. I would just use the default of the operating system if I were you. Easier when you go to the forums to ask for help
