HTTP downloads still very slow on my side.......averaging around 6KBps

Any idea why a single threaded download will not max out a connection?

Well, either the server or a part of the link is slow (you can only download at the speed of the slowest part of it), or alternatively they are rate-limiting TCP connections. The fact that multi-threaded connections are faster supports this, as multiple connections would be open, and each individually limited to the same degree as a single connection. So 4 connections would be around 4x faster than a single connection.

You can do this either by dropping packets, which needs to be retransmitted, slowing the link, or you can have your router only pass packets for a certain connection at a certain maximum rate.

I see Second Life is also still completely dead. Today I can't log in, yesterday I could log in but not get my entire inventory.

I'm looking for 256kbps. My own Telkom line speed is irrelevant.

I can get that if I go multi threaded but on a single threaded download I can't seem to manage that.

hmmmm. okay. ill follow the thread some more before deciding

Thanks.
Must be option B then because the downloads are from RapidShare and I normally get far higher speeds with my other ISP on a single thread.

There have been odd occurrences though where single thread downloads run at full line speed (384k) for a couple of minutes.

If it is being limited however, that's kinda a bummer, as it completely messes with streaming video and audio (or flash games). Not being able to utilize such things defeats the point of having internet for me. Would this also explain why the speeds on a single thread download keep peaking and then dropping constantly?

I'm rather hoping that this is just a network problem that needs to be fixed.

Anyway, update from my side:

Audio/Video/Single thread downloads running slow. Multi thread seems to max out fine.

Overseas online gaming is dead (US side, haven't tried anything EU side...will do so later today)

Steam still floating upside down in the water.

Local is all good I think.

Mmm ... just purchased a game on Steam. Seems it picked up a local server for the download (steam.isgaming.co.za), so it's downloading at just a tad over 300 kB/s.

BTW, this is one thing I like about DC. Local connections (which is often the most important to me) seems to run VERY fast. Now if they can only sort out the torrents and Second Life connections too, I'd be a happy chappie.

Oh you've managed to connect to Steam? o.O I'm gonna try in a bit. Download some demos.

How ;(

I loaded an old axxess prepaid account (with 50Mb left) so I could update my client and actually login, but now that I've switched back to the DigiChilli account I don't make it past the Login screen...

Still got some slow HTTP downloads today, Gtalk and MSN still take many attempts to connect...

My MSN is fine, but I am getting timeouts to and incomplete pages from US websites.

HTTP International still crawling. Downloading from Rapidshare at 2k/s (Multi Thread using download manager). Could not connect to Steam at all.

NS going at 40K. Browsing occasionally sluggish. Some websites are quick, others very slow.
