Torrents are still slow however there has been a huge improvement in browsing (from the 5min i've been awake) this site loaded quickly. Last night i downloaded 225mb of a torrent. Whic is still not peak (5.1kb average) but hey it's better than the 0kb i was getting.

Just wondering if it's all torrents in general or if i need to reboot the machine and reconnect or summin?

I was getting > 30KBps on a torrent, but now I see its d/loading between 6-10KBps :(

EDIT : Its not constantly slow (or fast for that matter) - very choppy - sometimes gets to 25KBps, which is decent.....

Still averaging way below 10kb. Which is worrying because i see everyone else is above that sometimes. I have not hit 20kb ever.

Http is fast though.

Test just now with Rapidshare and a torrent with plenty seeds.

Unfortunately I cannot comment on torrents as I don't use them, but like I said http browsing for me is very fast

Wow, things are flying.... i really hope this is how it stays.

http - 20-30kb
torrent - just hit 10kb
rapidshare - 20kb

this is all on a 512k line!!!

*clap clap clap* Mr Cambodian Dave.

Thanks for the constant updates, even if they we're a little slow.
Your hard work has paid off and you should see alot more +1's coming your way :)

Thanks Dave for the update. I really want to move all my accounts to 1 so I can download and play games on 1 account ( not necessarily at the same time ). Before I was totally unable to connect to World of Warcraft but I can now. However I am getting huge lag, 5000+ and sometimes going up to 10000. We normally get around 300-500 from South Africa. I saw that you are going to be prioritizing gaming traffic, is WoW part of that priority?

Great work btw! Love that you banned the abusers.

I was going to complain about my torrents still being slow until I spotted my Steam downloads, EVE Online updates and Ubuntu updates causing my link to strain at the seams :D

2) We used my hammer. Handed out temp bans to 50 of those guys that were consistently pulling more than 5 gigs/day. This represents <3% of users on the system. Its not the way we wanted to go but we have to also allow our rep to survive and others to use the system. These bans will be in place until we're happy to let them back on cos we know that they can't break or circumvent any of policies within the system.

Hmm, this could be an issue for me. I haven't signed up yet as I am waiting for things to settle down. In January I am looking for at least three 4Mbit adsl unlimited accounts over three different ISP's that I will be load balanced. Now, are you saying that 5MB is a lot? Or is that just a lot for a 512K account or something running two sessions or something? On a normal day my network pulls between 15 to 20GB per day (p2p is not allowed). So if I was running over three different ISP's, I would be pulling at least 5GB from Digichilli each day. So would I be banned as well or am I missing out some other facts about the people you have temp banned?

Also, is "Download all you can" from your web site still justified in light of your current bannings of people who did just that? Please understand I could be missing some key information about the Digichilli accounts that got banned, but I am just trying to ultimately make the best possible choice for my network.

Things are still slowish on my side with regards to Steam, torrents and news servers. They pick up then drop its a weird yo-yo situation I am getting.

snobee I reckon those 50 were also using illegal methods while Dave&crew were trying to get some balance also maybe they were just test accounts? Cant wait to see the response though, it is a valid question :).

Couldnt connect with my account for the whole week (from Tuesday), I get an error when the 'computer register to the network'. Emailed digi....no reply. Phoned them, "they aware of the problem" and they working on it. Yesterday I gave it another go and it worked. This morning I can't connect AGAIN! This is ridiculous

Dave & co is still in the process of configuring their traffic management system. He has complained about users misrepresenting their traffic before (e.g. torrents disguised as HTTP). In addition, I have for quite a while now gotten up to 400 kB/s on local transfers, so it's quite possible to get a LOT of data out of your account, if you get them all from local sources. Would be interesting to see, if DC eventually does a traffic accounting page, what percentage of your traffic is local and what percentage is international.

Also, I would guess that most people are on a 256 kbps account, and not a 512 or higher, which is likely what a business will go for. On a 512kbps link, if you download 24/7 at maximum speed you will get 5.2 GB, which seems to be his current cut-off point.

Also, I don't really have a need to "download the internet". It's too expensive in disk space anyway. I just need to get caught up on my current queue (about 75 GB), then get he odd thing I am interested in (probably about 5 GB/week) after that.

5GB per day is *almost* impossible on a Digichill 256k account unless it is bursting to 512 CONSTANTLY (which is unlikely) or the user is on a 4mb line and either using a workaround to the speed limit or is accidently unlimited.

So essentially it seems Dave and co have only banned those who used beyond their packages actual accepted speeds for one reason or another until these speed limits can be properly enforced.

I'm pretty sure if you were on the R1000 or R3000 packages these limits would move up respectively. (And since the limit is almost unachievable on the 256k package I really don't see a problem with it)

Hi Snobee

Bans
This is a temporary measure that we put in place so that we can 'normalise' the network. It doesn't help having people tell you that things are slow when some people are pulling 15Gigs/day on a Spicy/256/one connection package and we spend more time trying to find out how/why they're getting through the protocols and making others slow instead of tuning the network. Its been invaluable but time draining.

We are also in a volatile stage right now as the number of these users:normal users is still able to affect the network. When we aggregate over the STM-4 level it will be less of an issue. We are glad we've learned the hard way what wasn't published by Telkom or ISP's or Router Suppliers.

Our marketing is correct, or will be once Telkom's ESR's respond correctly and allows our package/bucket shaping to work consistently across all ESR's. We are putting in place mechanisms to ensure this happens.

AUP
Our bannees are mostly users that have downloaded in excess of 50gig and some 100 gig in 8 days. This in itself isn't a problem. It just means that the network works but until we are happy with our shaper and can get Telkom to consistently impose our throttling for each package we need to ban a few(<3%) in favour of the many. Until we are comfortable that we have a handle on their usage patterns we will invoke our AUP which allows us to exercise our discretion in these instances.

We actually only have one techie, Hilly. The rest are from our upstream partners. Hilly does need to sleep sometime too.

Business Usage
In terms of business usage: There is a business package similar to the HOT package which we haven't had a chance to properly focus on as yet given the situation. It goes together with the 1024K minimum with a specially configured router to ensure max performance. We call it the Chilli box. We are looking to include this chilli box with all business or corporate accounts but they will either have to pay for the setup/hardware or sign a 12 month contract. This is also aimed at the corporates with multiple branches. We'll be trialing one client with 250 branches from this week.

Thanx for the chance to answer some of these questions.

+1

4mb users seem to be slowing us down. If i understand it correctly.

We've only created 3 priorities to start. Mail me your specific info for the games and I'll get them on the list of priorities.

Its nice to get the updates.

I've noticed that (like most people) local is considerably faster than international stuff, so I've shifted what few downloads I'm currently running to a local source instead.

Our local is MUCH better than international at this stage due to the IPC and SAIX bandwidth available.

Where are you people getting these local sources? Would love to have some local sources...

Man, have to say, even my iphone updates are flying now, will check on the ps3 network later on
