10gb a day!!!??? Man, then you have no problems while waiting out the temp ban, you already have everything there is to download, you must be going through hdd space like I go through underwear

must say flying now.first time its been useable.only did total of 3 gigs whole of dec.now it seems to be good. int downloads coming in at 250kbytes(multithreaded) a sec.got 384 account on 4mbit line.

250kB downloads on the 384 package? You're part of the problem then lad.

Not saying you're doing it on purpose or anything (clearly there is some issue with the limiting software and whatnot) but download steady at speeds beyond what you should be getting and you might find yourself banned like those others.

Eitherway I hope Dave and Co. fix the limiting sooner than later as that seems to be the cause for so many woes. (My speeds are great again but evidently not everyone is experiencing the same)

I still can't connect either, probably got banned. Now whats the use of having uncapped if you are not allowed to download?? sorry but I'm gonna cancel my account if it happens again.

Hi BlaaiSlaai

Indeed. You're a bannee at the moment.

Never fear. It is temporary situation or until your downloading 15gig/day doesn't affect other users.

I personally use my Afrihost account when having issues. They're great guys and they're happy to let you download as fast as you possibly can as you're paying them per gig. Hey, they may even pay me some commission for this. 65gigs at Afrihost - R1885.

I hope you understand.

yeah I guess I am banned, but just don't understand why they doing it. their packages are advertised as unthrottled, uncapped and no thresholds.

You were downloading at 4mb speeds on a 256-512 account. Those accounts provision bandwidth for that specific 256-512 amount but when you download at a rate up to TEN TIMES higher than that you take that provisioned bandwidth from others (particularly in a small start-up network like this).

Although the real problem is the system not limiting your speeds so it's hard to see who exactly we blame here.

Ok thanks, using my afrihost as well now.

How long is this temporary ban going to last?

Hi Basjohn.

100% correct. We should be able to manage guys like blaaislaai. Unfortunately Telkom's ESR's aren't quite playing ball. Together with the Shaper we should be fine soonish.

To avoid temporary bans, please exercise discretion and intelligence.

Hi Snobee

Bans
This is a temporary measure that we put in place so that we can 'normalise' the network. It doesn't help having people tell you that things are slow when some people are pulling 15Gigs/day on a Spicy/256/one connection package and we spend more time trying to find out how/why they're getting through the protocols and making others slow instead of tuning the network. Its been invaluable but time draining.

We are also in a volatile stage right now as the number of these users:normal users is still able to affect the network. When we aggregate over the STM-4 level it will be less of an issue. We are glad we've learned the hard way what wasn't published by Telkom or ISP's or Router Suppliers.

Our marketing is correct, or will be once Telkom's ESR's respond correctly and allows our package/bucket shaping to work consistently across all ESR's. We are putting in place mechanisms to ensure this happens.

AUP
Our bannees are mostly users that have downloaded in excess of 50gig and some 100 gig in 8 days. This in itself isn't a problem. It just means that the network works but until we are happy with our shaper and can get Telkom to consistently impose our throttling for each package we need to ban a few(<3%) in favour of the many. Until we are comfortable that we have a handle on their usage patterns we will invoke our AUP which allows us to exercise our discretion in these instances.

We actually only have one techie, Hilly. The rest are from our upstream partners. Hilly does need to sleep sometime too.

Business Usage
In terms of business usage: There is a business package similar to the HOT package which we haven't had a chance to properly focus on as yet given the situation. It goes together with the 1024K minimum with a specially configured router to ensure max performance. We call it the Chilli box. We are looking to include this chilli box with all business or corporate accounts but they will either have to pay for the setup/hardware or sign a 12 month contract. This is also aimed at the corporates with multiple branches. We'll be trialing one client with 250 branches from this week.

Thanx for the chance to answer some of these questions.

Thanks for the reply Dave. We'll see in January how the issues are coming along.

@blaaislaai, if you have the money to pay for the Axxess-express 384k account, it is really worth it for torrents. I have one just for my torrents, and do easily 350GB per month now on average (used to do 600GB in March/April this year... but running out of stuff to download :-) - space ain't an issue thankfully). It is an alternative, but I guess if the extra few 100 rand is a problem then you will need to stay within the limits of other accounts.

Axxess is not 100% uncapped. They have thresholds and limits.

is it true that if you buy a 384 account on Axxess and you have a 4mb line, you will get 4mb/s speeds after business hrs ?

those rolling thresholds must be a b*tch!
5 gb is nothing on an uncapped service even if u have 384 line like i do..
but still, i'm thinking of getting an account with them as i'm tired of not getting what i paid for at DC.
