None of these articles ever address the TV Lic. fee becoming a thing of the past.
Also, had been thinking that SABC channels now broadcasting news in 'stretched format' has to do with their uptake of digital.

it seems to be with all broadcasts from the SABC2 news studio.
.. content in 16:9 and advert inserts in 4:3.

How will this affect DSTV subscribers with their own decoder and dish?

This management of decoders sounds like a lot of money to protect a small number of subsidised decoders, which will become irrelevant over time as DVB-T2 capable TVs are bought and phased in.
Botswana and the like do not want our decoders. Chinese imports will be end being a lot cheaper.
