Digital TV live test channels revealed

Surprising, something is delayed.

And all this and Cape Town, a metropolitan city, doesn't even have a digital transmitter.

At the risk of asking a stupid question...

Is this DVB-T ?

I have an HP HDX18 series notebook that with a DVB-T receiver and windows 7 with media player installed, I wouldn't mind receiving some free to air channels so now and then?
 
Yes it is DVB-T, and you could receive the channels now but apparently it will only be viewable using a SA made set top box in the future....

I know, thats bullcrap
 
If you can fit 8 digital channels into 1 analogue channel, then theoretically that means that we should have 32 channels(sabc 1,2,3,etv & mnet), 11 is better than 5, but far from spectacular

Sony is bringing out a TV with a digital tuner built-in - should be here within the next few weeks ;)
 
Well ICASA has screwed up Cape Town DTT transmitter allocation - again.

2 x 5kW transmitters on Tygerberg and they only allowed 200W output - jeesh - that won't even reach Voortrekker road.

Checking the stats on my series 6 SamsungTV, it sys it has : iDTV (Integrated DVB-T Tuner)

But the description says :

With the high definition DVB-Terrestrial tuner now conveniently built into the Series 8, the TV now can receive hi-definition terrestrial broadcast without a set top box, complicated wiring or extra power. Picture quality is also optimised with the integrated tuner.

I guess I need to check with Samsung :/
 
Have been watching DVB-T for a while now using an internal tuner.
the tuner was sommer a cheapy I got for like R300.
Works great for recording.

I have a box (part of the Mnet DTT trial), and it works reasonably well. A couple of things get irritating, though:

  1. The picture goes for a ball of poo when it rains. I'm sure all of you DSTV subscribers are used to it, as it is inevitable with dropouts of a digital signal, but as an analogue-only user up till now, it's bloody annoying
  2. Sometimes the picture goes black and white only, regardless of which channel I'm watching. I have to turn the decoder off to get it to come right again.

The other thing is that some of the channels that they mention in the article are tagged as "Not available on your decoder", or similar (only in the SABC/FTA bouquet).

Not so. You can view it with pretty much any DVB-T receiver on your PC, so there is nothing particularly special about the transmission. It MAY be that you can't just get a UK FTA receiver and use that, but I suspect that that may be because SA is standardising on H264 encoding, rather than MPEG2 (which is a good thing, IMO).

But any sufficiently standards-compatible TV or receiver should be able to cope with the H264 encoded streams just fine. e.g. if they can play H264 encoded media from a USB storage device, I would expect it to do just fine with H264 over DVB-T, too.
