Digital TV Tuner Card

Two of my buddies have TV tuner cards, one works perfectly and the other one causes countless problems...

I believe that they're worth it, quite handy for those of us that can't afford a PVR (like me) :D

The one at Cafejava is a Yuan model. I'm assuming it's crap channels that only picks up? It only picks up free-to-air and I see the the frequency range is around 2GHz.

Somebody posted a like a while back on the forum, Digital TV tuner USB stick for R300.....
I have got a analogue TV card, got it back in the days that you don't need to get a tv license to purchase one, works fine and it's the only piece of hardware in my PC that's not replaced over the years.

Striker Extreme, Q6600, 2GB Corsair TwinX DDR2-800, 8800GT 512MB, 960GB Seagate SATAII, 1250GB Western Digital SATAII, 500W Thermaltake, 226BW 22", G5, G15

Can't afford? Yeah right..:p
I bought a Compro VideoMate E500...it couldn't pick up the DSTV signal , ended having to buy a Winfast card...which works pretty good!

The cheap ones are always crap, if you want a good card make sure it's MCE compatible, I feel MCE works better than DSTV's PVR IMHO. (you need a decent PC though)

You can get instruction to setup the local guides here

Obviously it won't pick up. DSTV's signal is encrypted and the frequency is far higher than a Digital TV Tuner Card.

I am also using my TV tuner card to pickup DSTV channels from decoder output. I think he meant this not pick up DSTV directly.

But I saw a Satellite dish + receiver/decoder+tuner card for R500 somewhere online, can pickup the free channels.

Oh ok, I see what you mean. These Digital TV Tuner Cards can only reach about 2.5GHz whereas DSTV's signals are in the 11GHz range. They only pick up free-to-air channels and that's why I'm assuming it's crappy channels, cos no good channels are going to be free. It's probably not worth buying it then.

hi guys

i think it wouldnt be a bad idea to check around for a didgital tv tuner card now- since sabc will be broadcasting in only digital after the 2010 cup?
or would it be better to wait- maybe it will become common and the price will drop?
but i dont know bout the TV licence thing- they might start to really enforce the issue for TV cards as well ,so any advice -now or later- and whats the best digital tv tner card in SA ?

thanks
