Digital TV

Which is what I've been saying all along. Except now they can really enforce collections of TV licenses
Well, it gets messy now, because I will not be spending R700 on the ANC's propoganda device, so when the analog signal is turned off ... I will be paying for TV a license because ... um um um ... well ... like I said ... it gets tricky.
This is going to get messy.

Or would you rather pay for DA propaganda? I bet that whoever runs the digital tv in SA(hopefully not the SABC) will lease out the spare capacity to other broadcasters which should get more people onto the platform. An initial R700 upfront and a yearly licence fee is small change when considering the potential of digital tv....soon we'll hopefully get TiVo and other DVR's which should be better than DStv's convoluted PVR.

Oh well, I think a lot of us will be downloading TV programmes in the future

That's definitely the way of the future...digital television might just hasten the demise of broadcast television as we know it. I've got several friends, most of them in the US who either watch or get the programmes from the internet.

One of them only recently got into The Wire after downloading the first season off a filesharing site. In SA we're still a bit far off from this scenario but it will happen, when is anyone's guess(depending on govt and Icasa).

That's what I have been dreaming of all along. True VOD over IPTV. You can use a PC or TV and visit the website of a broadcaster of your choice - then just click and play. If you have ever used an adult VOD site then you know what I am talking about. You end up paying only for the shows you want to see. Or if you like a series subscribe and get the podcast.

Paying a flat rate tv-license or monochoice subscription fee is wasting money because you never watch everything you are paying for.
