Digital Video Cameras

but like i said before, it takes too long to transfer to pc and in terms of actual recording time...how long is it? probably 40 minutes at a time, whereas with a hard drive model you can record for hours and hours and then when u want to transfer to pc, it's as quick as snapping your fingers.

first off, a mini-DV cassette takes 60 minutes worth of recording, thus it will take 60 minutes to read it back to the computer. I went with mini-DV for 2 reasons: 1) I do not have enough storage space (nor do I think there exist enough in this world) to store all my mini-DV cassettes on. 1 hour of recording = 12GB of data. I found it easier to convert all my tapes to DiVX AVI and store that on my PC, the quality ain't bad and if I wan to get better quality for editing, I can always go back to the original master by digging out the cassette. 2) and MOST importantly if I had a harddrive crash I would still have my originals to go back to.

dv takes too long to transfer and that's why i don't want a dv model. plus, i bought one recently and for some reason, my pc does not want to pick up the device thru firewire. so i'm looking for a hard drive model rather.

Just buy the Samsung MX10 with 4gb Flash memory, expandable to another 4gb with SD card.Currently goes for R2999.00 at Makro.

It records in mpeg4.

cheap,quick transfer...sorted

If i am not mistaken...those harddrive ones record uncompressed so 30gb is not that much.

AFAIK, most hard drive ones record to MPEG2. That's MPEG2 compression.

i wouldn't op for samsung cameras anyway. i'd go with something genuine like panasonic or sony or canon. you can never go wrong with them.

you are mistaken. All hard drive cameras record compressed footage. For SD cameras it's usually MPEG-2 TS, for HD it's usually AVC-HD (MPEG4 H.264).
