Hi,

Does anyone know whether it would be possible to directly use Vodacom's SMS Gateway (typically using their SMS HTTP API) for sending Bulk SMS's or using a Short Code? I.e. bypass a WASP and sign the appropriate contract with them directly.

It is possible to connect directly to the network operator to send bulk messages. You will have to apply for an account to get logins and network access. However do note that there is a once-of connection fee and a monthly fee for each account. There is also a cost per sms charge. Depending on the volume of messages that you will be sending....work out the math and determine what option will cost the cheapest for your needs.

You should contact their WASP marketing dept for more info and pricing.

Also, keep in mind that they did not have an API either back then (if they do now, I would love to have a look at it to see if it can do MMS via HTTP POST). When I enquired the general consensus was to use Kannel on linux with a SMPP connection. I've set this up before but it was tricky to say the least.

Also, if you just want to send via a modem (like a 3G modem or something) you should look into the NOW/SMS gateway - it can even encode MMS from a link to a pic online and send it straight through (along with WAP/concatenated SMS messages etc). This worked very well except you are still paying the cost for a standard SMS or MMS since you are basically sending like a normal person would - you don't need any WASP but you don't get any discounts either (maybe if you buy SMS bundle for the sim card). It can also retrieve messages and perform actions based on them.
