Hi all

Im thinking of getting a new machine for gaming, and after some research i found that directx 11 might be a concern. I read that directx 11 might be in vista service pack 2 and will be in windows 7 which sound like it will be released 2010 sometime.

It sounds like a rush to directx 11 when there is hardly directx 10 games. And there is a few cards that can even handle 10 now.

I was even thinking of splashing out and getting and GTX 285. With directx 11 on its way is it even worth it?

When directx 10 came out you get games that support both 9 and 10. ie crysis. And having a 9 or 10 card does not matter. So do you think the same will happen when directx 11 comes out? Games that support both 10 and 11?

I am not that clued up on the whole directx story any advice will be great.
My main question is it worth getting an GTX 285 now if direct x 11 is on its way?

I guess it mostly depends on the game developers, am i right?
If they write a x11 only game you stuffed? If they write a game for x10 and x11 then its cool.

thanks

Just shows that tech is moving way too quickly to keep up, mostly when gaming is in question.

Well, it is true that DX11 will be bundled with Vista SP2 and 7 RTM, but GPUs that take advantage will only be released in Q4 2009 and then there are 2 other things to worry about. 1) Remember how much the 8800GT was when first released with DX10? 2) The time it will take for DX11 to really outshine DX10 is at least 9 months to 12 months.

So in a short answer, is it worth it? No.

I second the 'no' vote. We're only going to see DirectX 11 games in three or four years since I doubt any studios are developing Games that support it and these days it takes at least that long to ship a game.

For R7000 I would also say no; there is much better value for money to be had....

I agree with all the above posts, and also DirectX11 will be backwards compatible with DirectX10, just like in the old days of DX9 and before. Basically DX10 will be a subset of DX11.

If you're really worried aout Directx versions just get a 4870 with DX10.1.

A better thing to do would maybe get a 4850 for now, then when your DX11 cards get released get one of them. That way you don't waste that much money.

Like the others said though. Games will come out supporting DX10 for many more years to come.

Im still running DX9... Because Im running XP... Dont get stuck on DX... Nother way for MS to get you to upgrade...

There is always something better around the corner when it gets to PC hardware. I agree with Defunct, DX11 will take a while to settle when it actually comes out. Hell, we are not even using DX10 to it's full potential yet. Go buy the 285, play it stukkend and sell it when you need to upgrade, which wont be for the next year anyway.

Maybe the 9800GTX + or the HD 4850 then? Upgrade end next year?
Use the money saved from the Graphic card and use it towards the cpu?

Problem with getting a DX 11 card as soon as they launch is that they won't really perform that well, we have seen this with DX 9 and DX10 cards already, wait for the second generation or if you can the refresh of the second generation of DX 11 cards.

In the meantime get a Geforce 260 216 or HD4850 (get a HD4870 if you can afford one), this though depends on resolution you will be playing at and if you use AA.

Dude OpenGL is the same the new spec 3.0 was released a little while back so now you need to go and buy a new GFX card that supports the new standard if there are games that make use of it and you want to play them with all the bells and whistles turned on.

Why bother upgrading to 10.1 lol, its a gimmick ati came up with :p

Amazed nvidia didn't come up with dx 10.4 :p, I doubt dx 11 will take, dx 10 was an epic failure and only looking really closely can you really tell the difference :). Who knows maybe dx10 will be the new dx 9 which will have life like characters :). For now though dx 11 will be another way to get people to spend copious amounts of cash on vga cards :)

The website does work ... it just sells Mecer and Dell though :D

I was think maybe spending more on the cpu and then upgrade the graphic card later in a year or so.
