That would include me but I'm not suffering, not that I'm complaining :D, must be localised spots.

At 11:55 on 18/10 I am still getting disconnects in Fish Hoek every few minutes.

v3g is there any news on when we can expect a fix?

Pretoria as well snap!

Does anyone know what these 619 errors mean? I was just thinking, I have had so much crap again today with my 6680 connecting, always blaming it on the phone and it's bluetooth stack. Maybe it is not the phone, but rather the phone's version of a 619 error? Anyone have any ideas on this?

This might be subjective OK, but I've learned my lesson in connecting to the internet using a Celphone; Wireless internet is full of cr@p period - sorry folks if you feel offended!!!!!!

IMO a lot to do with signal: either very low signal strength or bad signal quality that causes handshaking whilst connecting to fail...

Zabzoo, I tend to agree with you - the technology is clearly still rather immature, though there's a great likelihood that it's an implementation issue (here in SA) - not sure what the quality is like overseas, so my comment is a stab in the dark.

YET AGAIN - only 32 minutes before being disconnected :(

v3g, what's going on? How can Vodacom have so many issues with GPRS/3G months after the initial launch AND the only viable method of getting any proper feedback is through an on-line forum? Rather short-sighted that Vodacom offer better service on-line, than via voice, considering the problem relates to on-line connectivity!?!!? Go figure...

From what I have worked on error 619 normally is a signal problem, where the card sees the network but the network foesnt see the user..

However with novatel cards there are "little things" that you may have to check, check regional settings in the vodafone folder in the registry, make sure its South Africa but generally switch to GPRS only for a while and then revert back to 3G only later

@ic what is strange is that in the last couple of weeks since the disconnects started again I get a lot of 619's when trying to reconnect which I have never seen before.

Location hasn't changed signal strength looks the same (cant vouch for the quality though)

It's now 19 Oct and the problem persists... was connected for some 27 min before being disconnected.

Anyone else still experiencing problems?

14:18 on the 19th Fish Hoek -still getting disconnects every few minutes unless I run a stay alive which seems to keep it running a little longer.

Does anyone know if this is a problem that is being fixed or do we just have to put up with this from now on???

Been having this problem for a while now. As far as I can see it is here to stay. Now I really regret having got into a contract. ADSL is looking the more attractive option, especially since my data requirements are rapidly increasing as our company is growing.

On average I would reckon that my system disconnects at least fifteen times a day. Have just installed Stay Alive and hope it will improve things, but have already have had two disconnects, despite pinging every 15 seconds.

Hi

Have you tried using another providers SIM. I am in CT with MTN prepaid and I have not noticed any disconnects.

Get a prepaid SIM and test it. R0.95 from PnP.

V3G

My connection is a bit better now (can stay connected for up to an hour), but yesterday I was in Parktown for the afternoon and could not connect for 3 hours. Could this problem be area specific?

I had a 90 min connection earlier, but had to disconnect, so not sure if things have stabilised. I spoke to v3g and it appears it may have something to do with switching between network cells... keeping the connection alive holds the link on a single cell. So.... they've possibly established where to start looking in order to fix this.

I must say, I think Vodacom should prioritise stability over rapid expansion on their network, as apparently these issues arise due to Vodacom having to regularly cater for increased demand and as such modify their network. That being said, I don't believe in compromising existing services in order to cater for expansion. My business' customers never notice infrastructure changes/upgrades on my systems and seldom, if ever am I affected by my up-stream providers.

Here endeth my monologue.

All valid points :) , but we get an equal number of appeals for 'Can we please get coverage in this area', so it's always a balancing act.

No one would knowingly introduce instability over expansion, but problems can (and do) occur due to the expansion of the network and the user base. For example; the disconnects we saw in Cape Town (and Durbs) a while ago was a direct result of capacity, hitting limits that weren't supposed to have been there.

I's actually quite a dynamic situation. There are people expanding the network and those that must ensure the stability. They both have to agree before any work is done and the team who is tasked with keeping the stability has authority. I often see work order requests being denied for this very reason.

But everyone is screaming for more coverage, better throughput and more services (this forum is especially vocal!!) and this must be accommodated while keeping the service stable.

Definitely not a boring environment to work in!

(PS: You think that was a monologue? Just wait till Prom responds!)
