Discovery Bank

If I had to get the banking suite, do I need a separate card for the cheque account and the credit card account or is everything linked to a single card?

I see this dodgy cadre bank was in the news recently because a British authority flagged it to be dodgy like it should be

As some people mentioned, they aren't considering the cost of Vitality etc as well. Just the "miles" component which isn't a true reflection.

Miles is the easiest relatively if you shop at Woolies and exercise regularly and have small kids to make money from.
That sounds illegal

This does not change your miles earned....
The system works at item level, not basket level. Each transaction is analysed, non-qualifying items are disregarded, and only qualifying items count toward the final transaction total. So a trolley with vegetables and chocolate earns exactly the same as buying the vegetables alone. Splitting groceries into "healthy" and "treats" doesn't affect cashback at all.

Where his statement has a grain of truth is Vitality points (not miles): you earn points for healthy items and lose points for unhealthy ones, though points never drop below zero, so at worst you earn nothing from that shop. Even then it's capped, so the upside of splitting is minimal.

Shame they really are getting ripped while requiring far more products for rewards.

Guys posting numbers ANNUALLY for double the fees what I make off eBucks in two months.

@Smiggles i got a notification that you posted and disagree with my previous post, but can't find your post.
If you want help with discovery happy to chat send me a PM.

As with any reward program, it depends on how much you spend. You can't compare without all the details. There are people who benefit a ton from Discovery by buying from Woolies or Checkers. These days, almost all the groceries you buy can fall under Vitality. Just have to go with fat free dairy, then there's ostrich, chicken breast meat, all fruits and veg, etc. Getting like 50% to 75% back in miles which you can then use on miles day to get another 30% discount on things adds up fast.

eg. You buy fruit and veg for R1000 and are on 75% Healthyfood. You get 7500 miles back. This is worth R750. On miles day you can get 30% off on things. The R750 is worth R750/0.7 = R1071. So you effectively got your fruit and veg for free and Discovery paid you an additional R71.

On 50% healthyfood it works out to R500/0.7 = R714. So you spent R1000 on fruit and veg, got R500 in miles back which is worth R714 on miles day. So you could look at it as spending only R286 for R1000 of fruit and veg (71.4% discount), on 50% Healthyfood which is what you get from the lower fee plans.

ebucks can also be good but like I said you can't compare. People can say they get more back but it means little if you're only spending R10k on groceries per month while they are spending R30k+ per month.

100%
But if you spending the money it's worthwhile getting the extra from the bank games...

Need to compare the same level of accounts, PW to Purple, etc.

On Purple you can get 37500 miles from healthyfood every month which is worth R5350 on D-day.
Then theres healthycare, healthybaby, insure, etc.

With FNB smart spend was reduced. The deals on the 15th are a lot more limited than what Discovery offers, the last good deal was the PS5s from Koodoo.

Well I’m only on Premier on FNB and these folks were paying double what I do in fees so presumably on a much higher tier while getting far less out.

And being forced to be on Vitality and be healthy etc etc.

People were moaning about hoops for FNB, but Discovery seems to be taking it to a whole new level.

Whats giving you the most rewards?
Is it a specific spend?

I thought this was on a basket level. 1 unhealthy undoese 1 healthy item. You'll get miles for the purchase from Checkers but not for Healthy Food.

You get basic miles for all spend.
Spend on virtual card earns a little more.

Pick a healthy food partner and earn upto 50% back in miles on purchases. Pick a healthy care partner and earn upto 50% back in miles.

A young family trying to eat healthy and buying nappies, wipes and making an effort to buy vitality items when available (yes this is a choice if you have a specific soapy or shampoo it does not work). Can do pretty decently on miles.
The bastard move by discovery was removing otc meds from the vitality items.
