I'm considering moving from my current insurer (Kingprice) to Discovery but I've got a few questions:

1. Is the installation of their DQ Tracker compulsory? I have Beaeme installed currently.
2. Will the premium be linked to how I drive?
3. What are you experiences with Discovery?

I really wouldn't want to have the feeling of Big Brother watching me when I drive.

I don't see the big hoo-ha with 'big brother' watching how you drive. I definitely don't drive to their standards, and although I don't maximise my cash back benefit because of this, I still do get some cash back, which brings down my monthly premium. In my eyes, that's still a win.

Was the installation of the DQ device compulsory?

The DQ device is compulsory to get back your rewards. I have it fitted on my multiple cars. The one benefit of it was when my SO was involved in an accident. The impact sensor alerted DIscovery and everything was taken care of from emergency services to towing and repairing of the vehicle. Another friend of mine had an accident on the highway late at night and a very serious one at that. The impact alert got emergency services to them. I think that's the bonus part of it.

The DQ tracker is not used to determine your premiums cause my driving has not changed at all and I still get money back but I noticed that from last year to this year my premiums have comedown by R300.00.

if I remember, there are two devices, one installed in your vehicle, and one downloaded on your app. If you were worried about being monitored *cough* dodgy person *cough* ;) Then, go for the app tracker, and don't use the application? I'm not sure if they still allow the application though.

As long as the DQ device is not compulsory I'm willing to give them a go.

Kingprice has come back and matched the premium Discovery is offering, but the excess is still too high.

used to be kingprice myself, found them to match premiums and excess quite readily, ALL insurance companies are this way,
until you have to claim, that is where the fun begins, and where they pull so many stunts to avoid paying you.

 Just seeking a little bit of autonomy in this information-hungry society we live in. Asked the broker to get more information before I move over.

I had 2 claims last year (the second resulting in a write-off) and Kingprice didn't give me any issues at all and paid up. They are not budging on the excess although they've matched the premium. The excess is x2.75 what Disco is offering.

The person who worked with the claim twiddled thumbs and I had to request settlement amounts on a weekly basis for a month. He even ignored status request and phone calls. After complaining on Helopeter a senior manager got involved and it still took a week to get the pay out. And Discovery insure is forking expensive.

I always thought they were expensive so I never bothered to check with them until after my last annual increase from Auto & General. I was paying R1400pm with Auto & General a few months ago. Paying R660pm now with Discovery Insure.

I'm just waiting for the NPA to subpoena discoveries data on your driving when they need it for whatever case they have on the driver.

I'm a firm believer in doing nothing wrong, and not finding myself in the poop. I see no issue with Discovery having the data. If you want to benefit from what they offer, join them. If not, go for some other insurance company that doesn't reward based on driving habits :)

Discovery cost R3000+ a month for 2 vehicles + household. Now I'm paying R3000 for 3 vehicles + household

:-) Fair enough, but accidents happen
