Anyone had issues with canceling a Discovery Credit Card? Submitted the request last week as well as paid the respective "settlement fee" ( which was actually over and above the outstanding balance of the account ) and they still have yet to close the account? Never had the issue with any other credit instruments, normally you settle and it's closed

They probably not sure what to do with the credit. Should always pay to balance it to 0.0

They insisted on the extra otherwise the account would not be settled. Supposedly will pay back into a nominated account.

Lol, just got off the phone to them, still not closed and they insist on a closure form, which was already emailed to them that they didn't pick it up, over two weeks ago. Now they found it and still delay the closure.

Frikkin card fee, service fee - fee this, fee that, fee fee fee fee :(
Also about to close mine.
Bloody ripoff. The whole of Discovery.

Even closing is a problem, they don't seem to want to do it and just keep holding the account open. Oh and I've been told someone will contact me about retention, really, I've paid in the settlement amount, I don't want the card anymore.

Tell them that you are forward if a complaint to the banking ombudsman. And you also need an email to send them a bill for wasting your time. It really pisses me off of a basic process like closing an account should be that difficult.

And throw in the NCR as well.

I realize this thread is 10 months old but just wanted to re-iterate, Discovery Credit Card still follows this ridiculous practice. You cannot cancel without filling the form (even if the operator says otherwise on your call). And they will keep billing you and stealing your money until they decide to follow through on your request.

If you nag, they eventually close, although they stole about R20 that I had as excess in my account :( They insisted on a settlement figure higher than the actual outstanding amount and kept the balance.

And no, there was no interest as the card was constantly rotated ie: within the 55 day interest free.

Got the same issue with Absa, I owed zero on the credit card card but they insisted I pay R14 for some outstanding amount, yet my balance was zero. Now I'm still receiving my statements in a credit of R14 and according to absa the account is closed.

I would love a bank to try that kind of nonsense with me..

Them : "You must pay X to "settle" the account"
Me : "Account balance is at zero, just close it"
Them : "No you must pay this figure to close it"
Me : "Ok, you can keep the account open if you feel like it, I have got printed stamped statements from the bank showing my account being at zero as at time of request for closure, I owe you nothing and will not pay you a cent for closing it, good day"

Nedbank is a headache too. I'm trying to close my nedbank greenback gold credit card.

EFT the balance and battled to close it. I taught it was closed until I got a email from debt collectors for R500 or so because greenbacks payments changed to monthly debits and not yearly like before and then arrears fees and non payment fees and now debt collectors fees.

WHAAAAT THEEEE F

A credit card is Satan!

Hey Guys

Are they still doing this? I want to cancel my Discovery credit card. Must I make sure my balance is 0 then tell them to close it? I dont want to phone them and ask them to cancel it and they send some hidden costs as mentioned in this thread.

The extra you have to pay in is the pro rata fees up to date of closure. I had to do this with my ABSA credit card last month when I asked them to cancel my credit card. I settled everything, a little extra for pro rata fees, and then a retentions person contacted me and said that they will keep my account open but not charge any fees. So I kept it open.

Make it zero, then request the cancellation and when they start throwing fees at you tell them to get bent.

Why? Fees are normally paid at the end of the month. So you still owe a portion. What is wrong with that?

Do you expect companies to have accounts open for you for say 25 days at a time, whilst you close and reopen the account and thus pay no fees for the rest of your life?

I would expect the standard fees (such as a card fee, account fee) to be prorated and an invoice to be presented. Any additional fees relating to interest would be a straight up no.
