Discovery Insurance

No, as far as I can see, they will look at how you drive, because the info will be there, if you are driving at some crazy time of the morning. You might actually be a shift worker and not going clubbing, but it will obviously nail the regular clubber who does drink more than Appletiser.

Not sure what you mean about the Kruger Park, where you doddle along all day at 40. If you have to blast past a slow moving truck, they can also see where you are at the time via GPS, so that won't be a factor.

... but if you blast past 20 trucks getting there - they'd class you as aggressive when you're simply overtaking

No, they wouldn't. The telemetry will show you cruising at 120, slowing down to 20, sitting at 20 for a period, then getting back up to 120. Nothing aggressive about that at all.

Ah ok.

Depends how smart the software is.

I'm assuming it's dumb and simply see's '100% throttle at 14:03, 14.15, 14.50 etc'

But I'll see next week

Sorry, I cannot agree with you. There is absolutely nothing safe about an aggressive driving style. By adopting an aggressive attitude, you are putting both yourself and your fellow road users at risk.

See that's what I mean. An aggressive driving style is not necessarily and indication of an aggressive attitude (of course it can be), especially towards other road users. Of course an aggressive driving style blows all vehicle sympathy concepts out the water, which increasing running costs. I am in no way trying to make a case for the bad attitude of a driver, which no clever programming in the world can monitor (hmm maybe a heart rate monitor or something) that. I am only speaking about the way in which a driver uses the car's controls, not about the decisions he makes, or fails to make.

Too much emphasis and the physical side of driving, no emphasis on the mental side of driving.

Doesn't seem so bad.

They reward rather than penalize.

The premium he gave me for the car is far ahead of Outsurance and the like - and the 2nd cheapest I've ever got. No amount of speeding, harsh acceleration etc will increase it ... but they'll reward for good driving

AHA!! I like that! :D

Reward good behaviour....works well with kids and animals, now to try it out on drivers. Maybe we should be forced to be monitored this way....might sort out quite a few problems on our roads! ;)

Ah ok, that sounds a bit more acceptable, so I can still floor it to reach 60 km/h as quick as I can without being punished...way more acceptable. :D

@MFour - surely a calm mind will result in a calm driving style? ;)
Hehe yes, one can hope. A thing to ponder, I can easily drive like a total ponce and endanger everyone within spitting distance around me, calmly and peacefully oblivious to the destruction and mayhem I leave in my wake, not too difficult to achieve.

I get your point, and although I cannot say that I see this kind of monitoring as a means to an end, I suppose I have to concede that it is a good(ish) sign that someone is trying to do something (albeit a marketing tool disguised as something else;)).

So what are the premiums like for you guys on this new system, what cars do you drive and what distance do you do every day?

He gave me R950.00pm for a 2008 Volvo C30 T5 Redesign - and the just under R1,800.00pm for the car, buildings and contents at R1,5m and R45,000 specified items. I'm paying R850.00 and R1,700.00 currently - so within R100.00 and very comparable to my current insurance.

The difference is that (I hope I understand it correctly!) up to 40% of my fuel back at BP ... depending on points I receive. Points can be received by servicing your car once a year, having a TWT tyre check once a year and general driving (night driving, harsh acceleration/breaking etc).

Looking my car alone, I'll NEVER go beyond R950.00 - if I do 250km/h at 3am every night and brake till a standstill. I will - however - get reward points which add to how much petrol I get back. So a service, tyre check and decent driving may give me a 20% cash back from BP - R300.00 in my case.

EDIT There are discounts on hotels and rental cars too - but I didn't really care about that

So how are guys finding discovery insure? Did any of you sign up?

Personally I am finding the dq points system to be quite crap... :(

I've signed my wife and I up.

2 vehicles ( Corrolla D4d Exc 2009 + Hyundai i20 2010 ) and Household contents = R1.6k
Thats R400 cheaper than my old insurer, less excess and I save additional R220 on a tracker unit.
And then theres the fuel savings a month. Only just started but that will be cream of the crop for me.

I didn't go for it in the end - Big Brother scares me.

Also without the benefits, it was more expensive than my current insurer and even with the benefits, I'd probably save R300.00 or so max per month.

But I feel bad about the guy coming out and explaining the whole thing to me. So if any of you are interesting, PM your name/neighbour to me (if you're in Johannesburg) and I'll get the guy to come out

I will not be told how to drive by my insurance company. I pay them, they cover me. DONE!!!

This wouldn't work for me, I tend not to drive like an old lady...

I'm going to meet the guy next week and see what it's all about.

But if need to get far, far cheaper per month to adhere to this Big Brother stuff. I don't see driving at 2am a negative ...

Most write-offs with no TP involved occour between 01:30 and 04:00 and hence there is a concern from insurers. Some insurers apply higher excess's for this time. The future of motor insurance will be based on driving type by some instrument so we had better get used to it.
