Hi all,

I have been on KeyCare Plus for a long time however due to the close costs for Coastal Saver and KeyCare Plus I am attempting to evaluate whether it would be a good move to do so.

Any input? Advantages/Disadvantages? Another option I am not seeing?

More info: https://www.discovery.co.za/portal/individual/compare-medical-aid-plans

Cost to me:
KeyCare Plus - R1,734
Coastal Saver - R1,862

Unless you actually live in the same suburb as the Keycare Hospital and your Keycare GP, it's not really worth it.
You don't want to spend major costs in time and travel to get to see your doctor or get your treatment.
It needs to be close by.

Keycare has unlimited gp visits i think :erm:

Coastal Saver has limted GP visits but better hospital cover much better.

It comes down to if you visit a GP a lot, or if you want it for the better hospital cover for just in case.
If you stay near the Keycare hospital and GP then it is worth it

Have a look at their new Smart plan.... it has some interesting benefits.

Enlighten us please?

Coastal policies have much better cover for hospital so if that's the main reason for the medical aid then it's a no brainer to rather change. If you or other dependents covered by the policy need to go to the doctor every 2 weeks then not so attractive so change.

If you live near one of the hospitals on the Smart plan, it may make sense even from a purely hospital plan point of view since it seems to pay 200% rather than the 100% on Coastal...

But also the scripts, and small co-payment for doctors visits is just an added bonus really.

Yeah, Smart Plan is basically Keycare for the middle class / young adults. Not a bad option at all.

I'm on Keycare:

I have 2 kids (2 and 5) with both births (c section) I went to a good network hospital, they paid everything. My kids went through a "sick" stage and I have a good network Dr, it's covered every time. My kid had her tonsils and adenoids done in hospital, all of that was covered. I go to the dentist for my clean ups and fillings once in a while, they cover that too. You get a free eye test and funds towards glasses every second year. I did that too.

All and all I'm quite happy. I have no "savings" running out in the middle of the year and then I'm in a pickle. Sometimes I even need to go to the ER at the hostpital with my kids, I need to pay in R100, but the rest is all covered.

I've been with Keycare for years and I can honestly say that I'm quite happy with it.

Yes..I have just done so.. set the change to happen on the 1st of Jan.

Are the details of this new policy on Discovery site? What's the difference in price and benefits to Coastal Core?

Im on Coastal saver and my wife on Keycare Plus, She has never had any issues. I have my daughter on CS and round about april she had a bad fall and we took her to the ER as we were concerned. She had a CT scan and it was all good so she did not get admitted. So they billed it to my medical savings account and it was basically depleted after that and the only thing I did before then was my spec.

Wife got good specs at Specsavers through the winter promotion and did not pay a cent, I took the summer promotion at specsavers and had took a R2000 knock to the MSA.

So Im moving over to keycare plus as one of the hospitals is close to where I live.

I think if you are at the coast then the Coastal Saver is a no brainer.

The non-coastal people aren't as fortunate.

But ultimately it comes down to having more choice. If you are happy with the Keycare facilities and they are close to you then no reason to move I figure.

Is dentistry still included in the plan? Also wasn't Keycare salary restricted?

Dentistry is included. They limit you on how many procedures you can have done in one session tho, but they still cover you. You also get a free clean per year.
