Updates to rules/point changes for Vitality..

Achieve your goals every week to boost your Vitality benefits and get free gym and free local flights

Free gym membership

You can save up to 100% on your monthly gym fees based on the number of Vitality Active Rewards goals you achieve in a particular month. The base gym saving is changed to 75% for all principal and spouse memberships, unless a member is within their first 12 months of a new contract. Achieve four goals in a month to get 100% off your Virgin Active and Planet Fitness gym fees. The extra saving is paid to you as cash back.

Coming early next year

Free flights

Save up to 100% on local flights (base fare only) based on the number of Active Rewards goals you achieve from the time of booking to the date of departure. The extra saving is paid to you as a cash back.

You will earn an extra 5% cash back for each weekly goal you achieve (you need to achieve four goals to start earning your cash back). The cash back is calculated off the base ticket fare only and can apply to multiple flight bookings.

Enhanced travel benefits

Flights

From January 2016 we have increased the number of return flights in a year to Harare, Livingstone, Mauritius or Victoria Falls regional flights to 12 return flights. These will now be added to your local flight limits giving you more opportunity to fly to these destinations. You can also use Discovery Miles to pay for these British Airways (operated by Comair) flights. Remember, your discount depends on your Vitality status.

Plus in 2016, Using Vitality Active Rewards you can get up to 100% saving based on the number of Active Rewards goals you achieve from the time of booking to the date of departure

Vitality Hotel Collection

From 2 November 2015 you will be able to book for other Vitality and non-Vitality members as your Vitality discount will apply at a room level. You no longer have to book for a minimum stay of two nights for most properties.

Plus a temporary limit will apply until 31 December, where we will calculate your room night’s limit by multiplying the number of room nights you book with the duration of the stay. For example, if you booked two rooms for a seven night stay, we will deduct 14 room nights.

For more information on booking holiday accommodation, click here.

Car rental

In April 2016 you can enjoy increased savings on car rental with either Europcar or our new partner Tempest. Your savings is still based on your Vitality status and from January 2016 will increase as follows:
Blue
15%

Bronze
20%

Silver
25%

Gold
30%

Diamond
35%

Discovery Card updates

From March 2016, Discovery Card will reward you in more ways than ever before. You can earn Discovery Miles everywhere while shopping and boost your Miles by up to 10x in select HealthyLiving partner stores and when you fill up at BP service stations.

Plus, you can now spend your Miles in select partner stores, as well as online and for travel.

Discovery Card travel partners World Leisure Holidays, Contiki and Royal Carribean now form part of the cash back partner network. This means that you will earn up to 20% cash back every time you book your holiday. The card cash back limit does not apply to Travel. Stuttafords will no longer be a cash back partner from 1 November 2015.

Please note that from 01 November 2015, Discovery Card holders will no longer earn extra Discovery Miles with the miles Multiplier benefit at Woolworths. However, Discovery Card holders will still earn one Discovery Mile for every R15 on all spend, including at Woolworths.

The total annual fitness points limit has been changed to 30 000 points per adult per year (20 000 points for kids) – previous base and bonus points have been combined.

Kids will earn the same number of points for physical activity as adults from age six onwards (age 12 for gym).

A separate assessment points category has been created, which includes the Vitality Fitness Assessment and Vitality Exercise Consultations. This means that points earned for those assessments will no longer count towards the fitness points category, giving you the opportunity to earn more points for physical activity.

New points-earning activities:

Colonoscopy: 2 500 Vitality points

Family history tool Set up: 2 500 Vitality points once-off, update: 500 Vitality points once a year

Kids Vitality Health Check: 2 500 Vitality points

Optometrist visit: 2 000 Vitality points

Points-earning activities removed:

Points for Prostate Screening Assessment (PSA) have been removed, due to its insignificant impact on prostate cancer mortality.

Certain fitness points with no clinical link to physical activity have been removed. These include logging a manual workout, completing an online challenge and motivating someone to accept and complete a challenge.

Can someone help in finding the correct page on their site explaining the different levels and all requirements?

My google fu is clearly not strong this morning.

4 goals a month to get free gym membership... we must look into that more. Not sure how the goals work or if I'll need a fitness tracking device or what's needed.

Personally I'm going to call their helpline and talk to someone in person for like an hour till I'm clear on this stuff. It's so confusing.

Base goals seem to be a simple X workouts per week, and you get 150 points
You can get additional points by uploading your workout data (eg heart rate)

edit: and these same points counts toward the free drink at Kauai or Vida E Cafe

This is 100% guaranteed. They won't allow you to log your own measurements anymore.

The interesting additions are reward levels based on your actual activity and not just status (free flights, free gym, free Apple iWatch, etc.) and the addition of DNA sequencing - but I think that's more of a Health thing.

Well, I guess if I can get a free Apple Watch to do the mandatory tracking with that can also work for me ;)
Actually any free tracking device would be cool to have.

I am very happy about this as I regularly do activities for over 60mins or run for more than 10kms. In the past I would just get my 50 bonus points as I max the 15,000 normal sports points very early on in the month.

At least Diamond will be easier next year.

Yeah I'm also very interested to know if there will be a device benefit.

Or, maybe that is the point - you will now need a fitness device to benefit, so most people won't benefit anymore.

They also only limit the fitness device upload to one device per day. So in my case I use my Garmin for my morning run and the rest of the day/gym a Nike+ Fuelband - Discovery is now only using one upload - makes no sense and they are stubborn to listen to my reasoning that this is a very common scenario. While it is very easy to rule out overlapping tracked exercises (i.e. wearing a running watch and another wearable at the same time should only take one exercise into account), there seem to be plenty of people around (according to the one Discovery agent I spoke to) who will wear two devices and have different time settings.

If you think of your fitness/healthy living as a lifestyle and not just as a means of discounts, it does not feel that bad. I wish Discovery would rather discount their premiums for active/healthy members.

That is what we say each year, this year there were no roll overs...I hit my gold status in last month...so another year of diamond awaits me.If you regularly do the healthy thing, reaching their goals are easy peasy...

This.. i max the healthy activity portion easily in june and only need a checkup and online to make the rest. pushing it up to 30k means i get there even faster even with reduction in points. I guess its because i do a lot of activities?

I think they manually set the priority of it.. before moves api i use to use the fitbit. Now if i remove fitbit i don;t get any step points.. so its like i only have fitbit on my device for this. :( annoys me but lesser than calling them because discovery vitality points support sucks

I get a 150 points for a gym visit in 2015, and 50 bonus points for using my Polar heart rate monitor.. I'm only get 100 points for the same next year

Where can i get a bluetooth smart hr that doesnt cost an arm and a leg. I noticed that if its bundled its really inexpensive.. the cool think about bluetooth smart is the supported devices is huge

One of these days you will be able to enroll for a PHD in Vitality. Maybe then you will be able to understand the rules.

It would just be another membership tier ;)

Well I downloaded the Discovery app and linked it to Strava on the phone. I'm going to see how well this works for tracking my daily cycle commute. I'm quite impressed with the app though, it's easy enough to navigate and it wasn't hard to set up the link with Strava.
