Discovery Vitality in 2016

You can use your resting heart rate to calculate your training zones.
Google "Karvonen formula"
Thanks.
For theoretical max HR, people usually just go with 220-age. Otherwise go look for a massive hill and find out your own max. Assuming you're not high-risk! (high BP, age, T2DM, Hx etc.)

That's what squash courts are for! :-)

Busting my ass off and my HR does not spike about 130. So dont know what could be working. Maybe it just means I need to push more

Many factors can influence your ability to increase your HR. You can have day-to-day variations even if you kept the exercise exactly the same - you could have had a bad night's sleep, meds (BP) or a few too many cups of coffee, or hormonal changes, or temperature changes etc.

Try an exercise that involves more muscle groups, e.g. rowing (as opposed to cycling e.g.).

Actually try this:
- google "DB thrusters" and watch the youtube video.
- do 40 seconds of thrusters, and rest for 20 seconds.
- repeat this 4 times (i.e. 4 minutes worth)
- if that doesn't take your HR above 130, I give up! :)

160 at brisk walk

193 at 5min/km run, if it goes over that I generally start to struggle to maintain my pace. (This is what I normally run at on my 10km run. If I go over 193, I slow down before I feel the effects of it)

Edit:

The point I wanted to make is that the HR measurement isn't the most accurate to determine intensity of a work out.

My one friend never goes over 130, even if he is struggling to keep up.
Using the Karvonen formula my max heart rate would be 193 and which puts my 85%-90% range withtin 173-179 bpm.
Doing HITT cardio and getting around those figures with fitbit seems relatively accurate.

I might need to compare with the treadmill devlce's HR monitor to see whether there is a big difference.

I do this at the gym ... never knew what it was called. Just did it because it "felt" like it worked more muscles. I dont do that many reps since I go for higher weight but will try to do that for for lower weights.

Can you do something like this with an Android phone and no Fitbit?

<edit>
OK, so it looks like there are many apps that can be installed on an Android or iOS device. Which would you guys recommend for an Android phone? I'm not into running or tracking my heart rate, so it would only be for the odd hike here or there to log steps.

Also, I won an Oregon Scientific SSmart Dynamo wristband a year ago... is there anyway I can get Vitality to recognise steps that it logs?
Using the Moves app since yesterday and it logged 5k steps quite nicely so met my goal for the week (200 pts) with one gym visit (150 pts) and 5k steps (50 pts).

Ah awesome didnt know about that. Free pedo meter.

Yeah, whatwhat's post had me looking into the Fitbit app which i thought could miraculously turn other devices into a free pedometer, which then led me to Strava and Moves. Pretty cool as now I can continue to meet my goals exactly and not overachieve and have them up my target by too much at each increment :p

The moves app destroys your battery

I did expect my battery usage to go up. Will see how it goes, however I manage to have 50-60% battery usage left end of day before loading moves, and that is receiving calls, whatsapp the wholeday and 2x 40min gps trips. Will see how badly Moves affects that, but I reckon I should have enough battery left for a day before recharging at night.

Which moves app are you using from the play store?

So I want to purchase the fitbit without the HR, how would I record vigorous training without the HR?

You need a HR device to do that.

You need a HR device to do that.
What a lot of ppl don't know is phones like Galaxy S series, iphones etc have ANT+ receiver built in, and can track heart rate through any compatible ant+ strap

I am gonna want to look at disabling Moves once i have reached my weekly target... Overshot my target by 50 pts.

I do find a lot of discrepancy in the values though.

The fitbit app, using the iPhone's sensor will pick up 3000 steps - while the Health app using the same sensor and my Apple watch records double it.

Hey Guys. This week I reached 1200 points! I am really hoping this is the max for the year and that next year it will go down as I will only be getting 100 points for entering a gym. I train 6 days a week and get between 7500-12500 steps a day so its possible for me to achive more HOWEVER there is only so much you can do.

I am actually thinking about disabling the fitbit so I can lose some point before all the benifits kick in next year.

I ran from one end of canal walk to the Kauai in the middle of the shopping centre and Moves logged it as a run and i got 150 points! Prior to that i was on track for five thousand steps. . Won't even need to go to gym at this rate as i only need 250 points.
