Discuss the Canon 450D here!!!

I just walked past my local Photo Optix on the way to work. They're selling the 450D body for £499, and the 40D for £549...
 
well, the 450D kit costs £50 more, but the kit lens alone is more like £110 or so. So if you don't have money for a lens the 40D might not be possible.

But then, I'd go on a diet to save £50 to put towards a better lens because I know if I don't whatever cheapy I get will bug me forever :)
 
Note the smiley... I've actually seriously considered getting the kit lens. I find 24mm a bit narrow some times and I don't always want to carry two lenses with me.

But for the sake of the argument, if I was shopping for the cheapest canon possible and I could only afford only one lens, and won't be able to buy again for a while, I'd keep saving and get something like the Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC or Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 DG Macro or maybe even the Sigma Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC Macro. But that's just me.

BTW, don't you sleep?
 
Coming to think of it, that Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC Macro might just be my next lens. At £200 odd that's a damn nice lens to drag along to the pub :D

Such a versatile lens. I'm missing mine. :(
 
I just handled the 450D this afternoon and it is very small. Too small. The "hand grip"(?) is also uncomfortable. I don't like this camera's design. I would rather get the 40D. The 40D just feels right in one's hands. The light was bad outside so my shots look like ****. I'll try again tomorrow.

That's why I got the 40D. The 400D made me fee like I'm cupping a spliff :D

lsmelsa - you handled a 5D once, didn't you? How does the view finder size compare to your K1000? No that I'm looking through my K1000 regularly I realised just how damn tiny the crop cameras' viewfinders are.

I was playing with the 5D the other day, and the K1000 viewfinder is bigger. Damn, that's a big viewfinder. LOL

The 5D's viewfinder is about 10% bigger than 40D, I think. :confused::o:p
 
That's explains things. I was pretty sure the 40D's viewfinder was bigger than the 400D (one of the big reasons I chose it) but both show up as 95%. I didn't realise the sensor is actually bigger too. Not by much although the net area shows up as 289mm² vs 200mm²

I wonder how/if dpreview also got it wrong - as far as sensor size goes they report the 400D and 40D as both having 22.2 x 14.8 mm (as does every other reference I've seen) :confused:

dpreview shows both sensors as 22.2 x 14.8 mm which matches what I've read so far - the 400D and 40D use the same sensor. Both viewfinders also have 95% coverage but the 40D has 0.95x magnification vs. 0.8x on the 400D which would explain why the 40D's viewfinder is bigger. I don't know why though - does pentaprisms and pentamirrors have inherent magnification, just a different levels?

AFAIK, the pentaprism gives a much brighter view than the pentamirror.

According to the 40d whitepaper, the 400d and the 40d do not have the same sensor:
"Although the EOS 40D’s single-piece CMOS sensor is based on the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi’s sensor design and manufacturing technology, new processes were incorporated in the CMOS semiconductor fabrication and microlens-forming process. "

I've read that as marketing speak so far, but looking over the 40D review on dpreview again, I read this:

Those "backend electronics" may very well be down to the Digic-III processor. It's impossible to compare the two sensors when they don't have the same image processors.
 
Why would one compare the 40D with 400D? If you have the money get the 40D. It's a joy to use compared to the 400D/450D.

40D is easer to hold/operate, more rugged, faster, has weather proofing and has a faster flash sync speed.
Image quality is the same, but the 40D is the better camera.
