Once again I am shocked by Telkom Mobile!! My wife and I have two cell numbers (previously 8ta). For the last 2 years our average bills were 2500 pm (TOTAL 60,000) When I wanted to upgrade my one number, I was told they had to do that credit vetting etc. MY ACCOUNT IS UP TO DATE! NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY VODACOM MAKES MILLIONS. When you upgrade you have to supply ID and proof of residence and your account must be up to date. Then you get your phone!
Maybe I should return to VODACOM!!
And I should warn customers wanting to sign up with Telkom Mobile and also warn existing contracts!

So you aren't credit worthy or you are upset by Telkom trying stick to the rules of granting credit responsibly?

What I have found is that some stores have untrained staff, and they are the ones that normally want all sorts of identification - basically treating you like a criminal.

I'm sure this will be rectified over time.

I had a very different experience when I went to upgrade my contract, in fact, I rate it as the best experience I have ever had when upgrading a mobile phone contract to date.

So some counter clerk or call centre rep sticks to the rules and you get upset :wtf:

It has nothing do with that.
It is simply an inconvenience. You have to supply: ID, and then again proof or residence and bank statements.

So they don't play by the rules?
Any comment from the MTN and Vodacom reps?
Why? They do. They've got everything, billing address, proof of residence (for RICA) - it ia their monthly bill by the way.

Anyone here heard of identity theft? The more identification they ask for the safer you are as a client.

But the credit vetting a second time did sound wrong.

OP probably upset he wanted to take out a new contract and they didn't see him credit worthy at all. If what OP is saying above is true R2500 per month and his account is a good standing order Telkom Mobile wouldn't refuse to upgrade him at all cause he is a loyal customer. Gold/diamond/platinum depends on your spending but if you heavy spender sometimes when you do upgrades they send you a complimentary phone of the same model absolutely free.

Credit vetting is there to secure a company they cannot hand you over R8000+ phone and you cannot keep up with payments on the second invoice. Then they have to blacklist you*wait you already blacklisted* they do a point check on your profile

Hardly seems like an issue worth being "disgusted" about? Would you rather anyone claim to be you, upgrade your contract and then walk out with a New iPhone or Galaxy in your name?
