Hi all

Trusty 20 year old Bauknecht dishwasher has packed up, been advised to replace it.

Was thinking Bosch/Siemens originally, but the LG Direct Drive has come recommended, very happy with the LG Direct Drive washing machine - http://www.makro.co.za/appliances/lg-14-place-direct-drive-dishwasher-229633EA.

2 year service and 10 year warranty on the motor.

Perhaps you have experience with this and can advise? Perhaps experience with this LG?

What is the quality of the inside like? Would prefer solid racks, not the flimsy ones which seem to be common these days.

Thanks in advance. :)

I use the Defy as I get "special" prices :p

Was there last week to look for a replacement. Ended up being not necessary as we went home and repaired the old one ourselves (1 wire incorrectly placed).

I'm not familiar with the direct drive, but I own an LG Dishwasher and know a couple of people who also have them. All of us replaced the pump motor on ours within three years. According to the technician it is a well known flaw on LG's washers - he said something about a mild steel rod on the motor that is constantly operating in a saltwater environment which leads to rust and then chews away at a rubber seal.

I've done mine twice and at a cost of around R400 (installation excluded) it isn't that bad, but just beware of this flaw on (some?) LG models.

Thanks, will look into this but hopefully the Direct Drive is better.

Have had the LG direct drive for just over 1 year. Best thing I ever bought. Works like a charm. So many cool functions like sterilising of baby bottles.

Good to hear. R6,499 at Hifi Corp, R6,489 at House and Home. I'll take that price to Game (R6,999) and have them price beat it.

*edit*

Thanks for the involuntary clean up, mods.

10 years is a long way out, doubt the rest of the machine will last that long in our house the amount of dishes we wash.
We have this same machine in our house which we bought from Makro, so far so good, must be about 2 years so far.

In my opinion the simpler the settings, basically ON, OFF, Short, Medium or Long Wash. One of our previous machines had a bunch of programs we never used and the electrical panel packed up within warranty, my parents who had the same machine had the same issue also under warranty and they never got it fixed.

We decided to buy a Defy Dish Washer for our holiday home the other day, it is a household name, there are repairmen and parts are available was our deciding factor. It also had a very basic program setting and the fittings at the back were all standard and did not protrude outwards.

Oh yes, the LG 10 year machine, because it has some sort of filter system at the back at the intake I cannot push the machine in flush with the counter.
The child lock on the LG does not work completely, basically all the buttons become locked except the main power switch, my granddaughter figured that out quickly. On..off..on..off..lol.

Awesome, thanks for this.

Does it feel like it's good quality? Are the racks/trays quite sturdy?
I have nothing to compare it to as all the Dishwashers we have bought were around the 5K mark so it could be much of a muchness.
The door seems quite sturdy and the racks inside haven't given any issues yet. It does make a knocking sound from time to time which is probably the dishes themselves or something else which I couldn’t say.
It does play you a tune when it is finished.

One thing. Some of the cycles are very long, we usually just use the Quick cycle which is an hour. There are a number of settings on this machine, where it can wash just one level but we have never used that feature.
As I said earlier, the more features the more things to go wrong. The thing must just wash the blimmen dishes, lol.

I will admit that I will be the first person to run down to the store to buy a new machine when our dish washer packs up. Once you are used to having a machine it is hard to live without it, unless you are a single person I suppose.

Sorry but I cannot simply recommend the machine to you as I have nothing to compare it to. Only the other day did we get the Defy for our holiday place and it feels much the same, it is after all just a Dish Washer. Hope you make the right choice.

SNAP

My replacement pump from beginning last year just packed up. I keep getting the E1 error.

Going to replace with a Defy.

Thanks for all your other input.

About the above, would you say that this is not true then? It is the standard size of most dishwashers, I think.

Product Dimensions: 60cm (L) x 60cm (W) x 85cm (H)

Could you please take a picture for me? The problem is that the dishwasher needs to be flush for the washing machine detergent tray to open.

Machine looks sturdy enough, wish you well to use it.

I took pictures of my LG, sorry never got to ask you for your email, anyway doesn't matter now.
Cheers.

Appreciate that. I did look at the rear of the LG today, looked normal and flush... Unless it wasn't set up properly, or unless I didn't look close enough. Nice machine though.

I got fed up having our LG repaired - pumps, motors, some board went the last time so we scrapped it. Ended up buying a Kelvinator for a little over R3k. Nothing fancy - it's only got half a dozen modes but TBH apart from Normal, Eco, and Heavy how many others would we use - having never used any others when we had the LG. It's reasonably quiet and efficient - especially in Eco mode.

We've owned a bosch dishwasher for about 5 years now, no problems yet and used daily.

R5k a dishwasher? We paid half that when we bought, damn inflation.

We've had our Bosch for about 3 years now and my only complaint is it is a little bit noisier than some of the others.

That being said, I do own the bottom of the range unit. It gets the job done well enough.

Bauknecht

Wow - takes me back some.

Personally, I have had an LG, AEG, Whirlpool and currently Defy.

Defy has lasted but the silver paint job stains.
LG - the control panel at the front failed, but other than that - it was definitely a good machine (was my first machine and I think the one that lasted longest) - certainly better than the Whirlpool. (AEG only lasted 3 weeks and electronics packed up).

I must also say, the pumps have never given me issues.

Only pump issue I have had was the drain pump = bottom left corner. It literally screws apart and you can clean the impeller. In my case, there was a piece if broken glass in the impeller. Not sure how it got past the filter?

BTTB is right, once you have had a dishwasher - you will ALWAYS need one - they dont need inflationary increases, lunches and public holidays - just salt and powder or tablets.
