I have ADSL through a service provider with a Telkom line. I am about 3 km from the physical exchange. However they tell me that the distance of cable from the exchange to me is 4.8km.

Telkom have informed me that I will not be able to have a 4mbps line over this distance and hence have to settle for a 1 mbps line.

Is this correct ?

Telkom also told me that I can't get 4mbps on my 2 adsl lines (currently not working though) at work and can only get 512, but they both are syncing and running at 4mbps. All I am saying is, don't trust everything they tell you, wait 30mins and phone again and make sure you talk with someone else and ask them...

SNR and attenuation tell the whole truth. Well, just SNR anyways as that's what matters when it comes to detection.

Its a pair of copper wires, and it run zig zag to the exch.
Depending on the character of the copper wire [twisted] you might get a good speed. It can only be tested when your line is connected.

it is amazing that they don't tell you all this stuff when you are making inquiries about getting the line

What is more intertesting is that CyberSmart has been charging me for a 4mbps line for more than a year now. I am going to demand a refund as they are charging me for a service that is impossible to deliver.

Good luck with that. If you ordered it and your router was allowed to sync at 4Mbps (even if it was unable to) then they've held up their end of the bargain.

Rather get the 512kb service which i believe is now 1mbit? You end up saving some cash from not paying for a 4mbit line and hook up an uncapped account

tell them you are also doing IT stuff and do not fool around
