What is the greatest distance that one can get :

HSDPA , 3G , EDGE to work from a tower - with 100% line of sight - no/minimal trees in the way at all.

Can the faster services work with 10km+?

I've got a transport company - about 10.9km from a Tower at the Kroonvaal Toll Plaza - R59/N1 intersection.

They have TelkomSpaceStream Express - but this is so unstable and a very much overcongested system.

Many thanks.

As a rule of thumb (although many factor contribute), the higher the speed, the shorter the distance.

So GPRS should be OK, HSDPA not.

But in all cases I'd go for a high-gain external antenna.

i have tested with a Poynting 11db high gain - and i could get EDGE there.

outside EDGE is alright (used my E620 with antenna)...inside users don't pick up edge with their E220s...

1 idea...getting a linksys router - with e620 - putting 11dbi on that - running ethernet to office....

but then again...its 100-200kbps for 13-15 people..

can one do some sort of bonding?

Did you try and force the E620 to search for 3G signals only? If not it may have picked up 3G, but "defaulted" back to GSM (EDGE) because of the stronger signal. I'm not familiar with the E620, not sure it can be forced.

Humour me for a bit on this alternative:
If EDGE is the only way, or even if you do get 3G, to get a larger effective pipe you could get a 2nd router, modem and antenna and use a data sim on contract to share a large bundle between the two systems. So you put half your staff on system 1 and half on system 2, but you share the same data bundle between everyone. This way you have a once off setup cost for both systems, but the monthly cost for the data usage remains fixed and just as low if you had only 1 system.

@[OUPA]MrNutz, as suggested by ajax, use [searchforum]3GOnly[/searchforum] with your E620, and retest, the best option would be for you to use [searchforum]ginggs' application[/searchforum]...

"- No external antenna for the E220, but Poynting is working on one.

- 3.6 later this year.

- No planned swapout."

I have tested USB extensions but they give me real crap with the modem...How do you plugin a Poynting antenna???

It is a coupling device, that uses the same principle as an acoustic coupler.

lucky you guys that can get external antennas, im stuck here with my e220

Poynting make a passive adaptor which works with the E-220 for 3G and GSM. We have tested these with a couple of customers and have had very good results using them - from 0>1 bars the signal increased to 3>4 bars. So don't despair, there is a solution if you have the E-220.
