I'm looking for a Divx dvd player as our normal cheapy dvd player just funked out.

I've seen this so far:
http://www.edreams.co.za/store/electronic/productlist/1139/DVD_Players/DVD_Players/

There's the Samsung, Teac and Telefunken, but the Telefunken has HDMI which I probably won't use in the foreseeable future.

Could you recommend any other Divx compatible player?

Also, can I play Xvid movies on a Divx player, or not? I don't know the answer to be honest :p

Thanks
tera ;) :D :p

Yes, you can play Xvid movies on a DivX certified player. Very rarely you might get a warning about unsupported File Format, but most of them can handle both.

That is not a bad price. You will probably find cheaper ones at Hi-Fi corporation for around R300.00... and in my opinion they are just as good. In fact, they are cheap enough that if anything goes wrong, you just throw them away and buy another one.

The local spaza shops here in Jeppestown have them for around R240.00 - cheap Asian brands, that just do what they are advertised to do. I have bought several and they are fine for Mom and Dad or the kids to watch their movies on. I just bought an El cheepo version for the kids... along with a small colour TV for R450 to put in their room so they can watch their cheap DVDs, and DivX movies I burned for them.

XviD's do Work on DivX DVD Players - just put the DivX Disc in backwards and it will become XviD. =)

Agh no man!.. How do you put a disc in backwards??? the optical tape will get all chewed up!!!

and if you put it in upside down, then you just end up watching the second reel of the movie first! :p

Look for one with a USB slot. Last year I bought a Huyndai Divx player with USB for R299 at Hi-Fi Corp. and it's well worth it.

Makro or Game should have some decent ones as well. I'd rather buy from them than Hi-FI. I bought mine at Game(Samsung) a long time ago and it plays almost all formats.

Not too keen on the Telefunkens... My Dad has always been a fan, even after the issues they have brought with them. I have a Philips system, and have never been happier!

The Samsung and Teac on that site look great! There's a place in Pretoria that sells stuff pretty cheap: almost got a Sony DVD recorder there instead (IIRC, it was R699)

You should also look at what TV you want it connected to...

As mentioned above, USB or Card-Reader is a great feature!

TEAC is pretty darn good! Many, many years ago, I bought a TEAC Hi-FI and it's still working today.

Went to the Chinese market next to Bruma and got one for R240.
Works 100%

And if it breaks after 6 months? I will just get another.
My el-overpriced LG one lasted all of 13 months, and now cannot even read a disk anymore - nice for the R3K I paid for it.

If that was a joke it's not really funny if you really think about it - Double Layer DVD's do exist and you can put half the movie on that side.

Don't buy a genuine brand. Buy cheap stuff.
:D

LOL RAS!!!:D:D:D
I would opt for a decent brand cos then you know you will get good value and no problems with repairs etc... It's not worth paying R400 for something and then a few months later you need to spend another R400. Rather just spend the R800 first time and get something worth your hard-earned money ;)

Ja, I know... When I bought "Starship Troopers" the first time it came on a "Flipper Disc" ... Flipping Irritating! :p I swapped it for a region one version.

I don't mind the flipper discs that have a full screen version on one side and the letterbox version on the other side though.

I am also in the "Buy Cheap" camp... by the time you have bought a "Name Brand" that lasts only a year anyway, you could have bought three or four cheap brands that work just as well! :p

Hehe - I appreciate where you are coming from - but paying Rxx to fix a name brand is not worth the R250 on just buying a new el cheapo.

Same with us, had a genuine brand dvd player, don't know what it cost, but it lasted a couple of months, then we got the cheap one and it lasted the past year and a half, now it's time for a Divx one ;)
