Diwali Fireworks

I'd love to see if a similar thread pops up around new years time when half the country is busting fireworks.. A few years back we where celebrating Diwali and our neighbour who hates Indians called the cops for us, they don't have dogs or anything. The cops came over we gave them a drink and they left, continued busting crackers the whole night. I find that people generally complain when it's Diwali but fail to do so when new years comes around, point above the same neighbours who complained about us busting fireworks on Diwali lights up the whole streets on new years eve. Although we light it up on new years as well.

And you're one of those ****ers who makes my dogs hide under the bed and whine all night. Thank you for pointing yourself out here. Be a decent human being and cut it off at about 9, so that I have time to settle the dogs, and get some sleep before I have to wake up first thing in the morning for work.

Quite enjoying it tonight.
Some coffee in the balcony, cool breeze, fireworks all over.
Nice evening...

You as a pet owner should of foreseen this, I don't light fireworks nor do I own a pet but both parties should have some sense of responsibility.

Had some earlier this evening . One of my dogs was pretty uncomfortable with it :( Thought it was illegal to do fireworks in the suburbs? I remember a few years ago some dogs around the area escaped and one was beaten to death and another hit by a car.

I do not celebrate Diwali nor use fireworks nor own a pet. But I do take offence to the lack of tolerance by many. Diwali as I understand it occurs once a year. Obviously there is some religious significancein the fireworks, just as there is significance in ringing church bells or giving the mosque calling etc.
Take precaution- Tranquilise your pets- but have tolerance!!!

I am one of those people who will complain about fireworks regardless of the "celebration". Firecrackers (not the damn military grade ones), and smaller fireworks are more than acceptable, rockets are not.

I am ok if it goes for 20 or 30 minutes at most, when it goes on for 3 hours, then I lose my cool and I call the cops. If your cops just came in and had a drink and left, I would have complained to the station commander. Rockets in a residential area are not acceptable in any way shape or form. They're downright dangerous and if one misfires that could cause a serious amount of damage to people and property.

We've also had a lot of firecrackers in Edenvale. Much more this year than in previous years. Fortunately my dog is going a bit deaf, so she wasn't phased by the crackers. Her brother who we had to put down recently used to hate crackers. I really thought that the use of crackers was on the decrease. They are really stupid

There is no religious significance to the fireworks beyond firecrackers being let off because it is thought to drive away evil spirits.

Diwali is the festival of lights, and specifically a clay lamp which is lit to symbolise the triumph of good over evil.

+1.

I'm an Indian. My family celebrated tonight, I however, haven't light up any fireworks for a good few years now. Hell, as I sit here (Chatsworth, Durban) studying for my Math final tomorrow, there's still fireworks going off.

Now lets leave the cultural/traditional and legal reasoning behind. Lets say, hypothetically, all Indian people are inconsiderate and inhumane toward animals. Diwali is not a new thing. Its been happening for years. Don't you take precautions to look after your pets anyway ? We purchase sedative pills for my dog, put her in a bathroom and turn on some music. She's been fine all evening.

Sometimes in life, we have to deal with stuff that, while it may not be fair and possibly is illegal/inhumane blah blah, is still unavoidable.

I'm really confused, is it you that has a problem with it or is it the pet that you own?

Tolerance of what, exactly? I tolerate religion. That does not mean that I am bound to be okay with its customs when it interferes with me. If my own personal philosophy or religion dictated that I should let off fireworks at 3am every Monday morning, and blow horns signalling the rising sun, I'm pretty damn sure that all neighbours, including my Hindu ones would have an issue with it.

Your understanding of what should and shouldn't be tolerated is fscked up if you think that fireworks should be tolerated because they are a custom. The religion itself is tolerable, but that does not mean that I must be okay with what the religion dictates to its followers that they must do.

Personally, fsck the fireworks. With one exception, I don't agree with them on Guy Fawkes; Diwali; New Year's; or any arbitrary celebration. I don't have an issue if people get together to watch a large fireworks display once a year. But every goddamn household bursting fireworks all night is just ridiculous. I was brought up with Hindu friends and family and celebrated Diwali with plenty of responsible Hindus who chose to congregate together as a community and have one fireworks display for about 10 minutes. That was great. This war-zone schit that has my dogs petrified and barking all night is ridiculous.

And don't tell me that I must go and have them tranquillized so that you can let off a few big bangs. The OTC ones simply don't work, and the ones that do work are insanely dangerous for a layman to administer, and are potentially lethal to animals. It's also hardly an enjoyable experience for dogs, in much the same way as waking up from a general anaesthetic is for a human. This bullschit that people must tolerate fireworks is asinine logic, and trying to convince people that they must do so because it is a part of your religion is equally fatuous...

How can you be confused.

He is my pet, his wellbeing is my concern. Over and above that, I have an issue with fireworks because the ones that are used (the rockets) are illegal.

By extension, there is no discernible difference, unless you'd like the dog to log on and paw his reply to you?

Did he not expect it to happen? I think there'll be no fireworks this year if there is fsk it! let my dog suffer:rolleyes:
I do care for the poor animal but he should of really taken precautions.

I didn't know they were illegal. Really.

Does that mean you could potentially sue the +-100000 that are lighting up in my suburb ?

What precautions are those, pray tell?

You're also advocating that everyone else now bend over backwards for the sake of letting a few people blow up some fireworks. That's the epitome of douchebaggery...

Why the fsck must I take precautions for some other idiot to partake in illegal activities that disturb the ENTIRE neighbourhood?

Oh and btw, I do take precautions, but no damn tranquilizer that one can buy over the counter will stop a dog from being scared shyteless when the rockets are so large that they're shaking the windows of my house.

Its this "but its a religious festival and should be tolerated" BS that also drives me up the wall. The way Diwali is supposed to be celebrated does not disturb an entire neighbourhood, and does not require the use of large quantities of explosives either. Hell if anything, a proper Diwali celebration is something that an entire neighbourhood (of all religions) can get involved in and enjoy.

Those rockets would more than likely fall under "Display firework" category in the Explosives Act, and that requires a licensed professional with permission from the municipality to control the demonstration with the proper safety requirements being met.

If they don't fall under that category, then they fall under "Nuisance firework" category, and then no more than 20% of the fireworks ignited at a location may be of that type.

Its not unexpected! If he had a newborn and talked to this neighbor I'm sure the neighbor would be understanding about this, this is not first time and this won't be the last time. He sort his problem out probably before Guy Fawkes not complain about it on the day.
