Diwali Fireworks

Its not unexpected! If he had a newborn and talked to this neighbor I'm sure the neighbor would be understanding about this, this is not first time and this won't be the last time. He sort his problem out probably before Guy Fawkes not complain about it on the day.

A group of us did go and talk to the neighbour, and we were told to pretty much fsck off and mind our own business.

Prior to today? If you did then your neighbor is the wrong.

Why do I have to do it prior to the day.

I assume my neighbours will be decent people and not go and disturb the entire neighbourhood, and if they do a kind word when it happens should be enough to get them to calm it down.

There's always that handful of twits every year who love to tell everyone to be tolerant, or be prepared, etc etc ....... please, blow off a finger and do us all a favor.

I was at a friends place on Beach Rd in Sea Point earlier.
Some folk arrived in the car park & proceeded to launch rockets into the sky from the beach.
Within 5 mins the sector police van was there, loaded one person into the van along with a box of something (assume fireworks), and that was the end of it.

I didn't know they were illegal. Really.

Does that mean you could potentially sue the +-100000 that are lighting up in my suburb ?

If fireworks result in the injury of a person or an animal, then the person responsible for setting off the fireworks is civilly liable. If the firework itself is illegal, the person responsible is both civilly, and criminally liable.

More importantly here, are the number of animals that through sheer desperation in their efforts to get out of a situation that they do not understand, and is often tantamount torturous for them, land up getting loose and are run over or lost. In my experience few people who celebrate Diwali actually take cognizance of the fireworks and their intended meaning. Instead it is simply an excuse to let off fireworks for the sake of it and it becomes a competition for the biggest and loudest bangs.

When I was a teenager I had the same mindset. Luckily I grew up and developed an understanding of the repercussions of my actions, and subsequently put an end to my bursting of loud fireworks for the sake of it.

In this case all that pet-owners and people who actually work after Diwali and Guy Fawkes are asking is that people adopt a similarly mature logic when deciding what fireworks to burst. It does not have to be loud. The light significance is in effect metaphorical in any case. No Hindu believes that his fireworks have truly warned off evil spirits for the rest of the year. So just be responsible. There are a ton of legal fireworks that don't involve bomb-like sound effects. Enjoy them, by all means. It is about the light in any case, not the sound...

There are a thousand odd people living in my neighbourhood. Talking to each of them is hardly feasible. Your supposed solution is absolutely absurd...

TL;DR whole thread but can I just say these fekking fireworks here in the north between all these thatch roof complexes are FEKKING ANNOYING AND (almost) NERVE WRECKING at times

I agree with your previous post.
And are you troubled by rockets in your neighborhood?

Oh for the mogs in Durban to be as efficient as that!

Apparently it is now the responsibility of people to pro-actively go around prior to Diwali and ask people to not act like teenage kants. Throughout their entire neighbourhood. Because some people seem to be under the false illusion that it is only one's neighbours fireworks that are audible.

Incredible how this lack of logic appears to be endemic only amongst those attempting to support the fireworks, and berate others for not being "tolerant". Tolerance is also not infinite. It has its limits, and I have reached mine...

I agree with you. As I said, I've also stopped busting fireworks for the past few years for the same reasons as you. People are people and religion drives us all insane. Is that a good excuse ? Of course not. Is it enough to get away with lighting up fireworks for one night... looks like.

I think people (on both sides) over exaggerate it a bit and cause problems when it could be resolved by a little consideration for others.

Things are actually quietening down here where I am, which is a far cry from the usual 2am sprees. Guess its time to sleep.

Maybe if you know people do such things maybe air your views before hand:confused:

As it turns out, I think Metro got tired of the calls from our neighbourhood... They came out and fined the guy R1500 from what I know.. the rockets then very definitely stopped from that house.

1) good to see that you agree. In that case can we agree that the setting off of fireworks that involve massive sound effects is both unnecessary and irresponsible?

2) yes, for large portions of the night so far we've had fireworks going off and at one point it sounded like a warzone. I am able to discern that it isn't, but my pets certainly can't. Moreover, it is still going on, although less frequently now. But this is 11:30pm!

So now I must know all 1000 people in my neighbourhood (actually where I live the number is close to 5000) and whether they're Hindu or not, and what religious holidays they partake in?

How on earth am I supposed to know every single person of the thousands in my neighbourhood who this year are likely to set off fireworks?

Please think this through and tell me if you think that this is feasible in any manner whatsoever?

The one thing Diwali always reminds me of is that scene from Saving Private Ryan where you can see the halo's of the shells in the distance lighting up the sky. Durban always looks like that on Diwali, and it sounds similar as well.

I would think this took part on your street?

Allow me to explain from my perspective. I have six dogs. 4 large and 2 small. Why? Because they were all going to be put down and my heart would not allow that to happen. So far they have gotten so worked up that there has been two dog fights that I've had to physically separate and they will not stop barking. My Jack Russell is terrified of loud noises as well. She has crapped and pissed herself tonight and has tried to find every nook and cranny to hide in. I won't sedate them either as the OTC meds do not work, and I am not a veterinarian, so cannot administer proper sedatives even if I wanted to. The other little on isn't bothered by them. In fact she sat outside watching them all night. Go figure. She does nothing for my argument. :D

But all in all this is the absolute worst time of year for pet owners, and as far as I am concerned is far from an over-exaggeration...
