Diwali Fireworks

You people are complaining about fireworks on diwali.

You should see sea point on the night of eid each year - living hell on earth.
Beach Rd is turned into a speedway by idiots in cheap & nasty cars trying to show off making as much noise & attract as much attention as possible.
The place looks like a pig sty in the morning - the remnants of a chicken bone festival, cold drink, beer & wine bottles (boxes) strewn as far as the eye can see.
A couple of years back some twat was racing & rolled his car into a tree (beach rd is straight & flat - one way traffic). People were treated to a display of the fire dept cutting the car open to extract the young girl trapped inside & screaming in terror / pain - then of course cutting the car further open to remove the remains of her boyfriend's body.

A peculiar way to celebrate one of the most holy days on the calendar !

Its about fireworks in general and how it affects pet owners who cannot truly look after their pet.

Are you aware of how sound travels? Are you aware of how wind works? Do you recall simple trigonometry from school? The sounds travels in all directions. Those rockets shot into the sky from a distance (i.e. in the neighbourhood) are clearly audible, and very much so, from blocks away. It has to do with the way sound travels from them in all directions and the hypotenuse of a triangle. Just think about it for a sec...

utter rubbish. Sound dissipates over distance. Dont act like these retarded displays are 105mm shells. They are 1 inch to 2 inch display shells. Exaggerate much trying to be scientific ?

secondly its not how "loud" a sound is that damages your ear its the frequency that is more damaging. I do high frequency sonication and it does more damage than all the diwalis put together in 5 minutes.

thirdly your pet (or any animal) will panic on things it does not understand and it will respond to YOUR behavior. if you panic and fuss all the time over fireworks you will stress your animal out more. My dog is an am staff he doesnt bother with fireworks. I sedate him but he is like a tank 15mg valium doesnt even say hello to him. He just chills wags his tail and looks. Why? because we trained him not to be scared. Guess none of your dogs ever experienced a really bad electrical thunderstorm before either lol

Things like a superbike whizzing past will do way more damage to the dogs hearing

If you pet escapes thats your own fault. Its your duty as an owner to ensure your pets are housed correctly and confined to your own property (legally as well)

Its also the constitutional right that hindus can celebrate diwali so get used to it. Hiding behind your pets for some pseudomorality to justify your intolerance is just cowardice

We know your fscked up opinion on the matter from last year, RiaX. I'm not rehashing it with you. I don't suffer your arguments well and I have absolutely buggerall respect for you or them...

No, the people firing off fireworks have a responsibility not to do it where it could traumatize anyone's pets. You can't shift the responsibility from them to everyone else in the neighborhood. That's ridiculous.

This family I'm talking about wasn't even home that night, because they were spending the week on holiday while someone else took care of the dog. They then had to pack up on New Year's day, which is supposed to be a happy day, to have their dog put down.

Do you expect people to plan their entire holiday around the fact that a few douchebag jackasses might fire off fireworks in their neighborhood. How many other people leave their dogs at home when they go on holiday? Do you expect everyone to stay home with their pets because jackasses like you want to shoot off BANG BANGS in the middle of a residential area?

No. The only responsibility here lies with the people firing off the fireworks, who should understand why doing it in the middle of a residential area is not acceptable. Their responsibility is to go find someplace else where they can do it. The very idea that you want to make this everyone else's problem shows what an entitled little brat you are. If you fire off fireworks in a residential area, you're a jackass, a c'nt and should be forcibly sterilized to clean out the gene pool.

So I'm left to guess that in this special place fireworks were never used before?

I live right in the middle of a huge hindu area was lucky that my two rottweilers were calm in the house with the on turned up,last firework went up at 11:45pm

No
The thread is about the inconsideration of those using fireworks in a residential area, and those using them that cannot truly give a crap about the disturbance they cause to all around them.

doesnt matter if you there or not. Your property must be secured end of story. That owner is a moron from my side. My pets can never leave my yard no matter what they do. I know how high my dog can jump and all the fences around the yard are taller than that. I installed gates to prevent him from squeezing or digging his way out.

you would leave a child unattended would you ? you carry on like the pets are part of your family but you will not take the time nor the money or the effort to ensure their environment is safe or train them properly. So thats your own fault

if your dog runs on the road and gets knocked whose fault is that ? the driver or you the owner of the dog?

People should be proactive about it like the OP and try to pass bylaws or enforce them as I think Durban has them, but don't go around pointing fingers and using your pets as a defense by showcasing horror stories that could of been prevented. It happens more than once a year and it happens every year...

Another issue is people that chain their pets up when they simply could fence of a part of their yard for their pet to roam.

utter rubbish.

Ironic that the first sentence of your post sums up the rest of the post.

Shifting the responsibility again as well as missing the point entirely. What do you suggest I do about my dog? One of us has to take our dog for a walk when we need to trim our lawn's edges, because he goes completely nuts the moment he hears the edge trimmer. Now can you imagine what a series of loud explosions does to him? We've tried over the counter tranquilizers. None of them work. Do you suggest I have my dog anesthetized every year so that you and your ilk can fire your BANG BANGS?

The very idea that the dog's reaction is the fault of the owner is just as ridiculous. Did I go crazy at the sound of myself using the edge trimmer and then my dog followed suit?

No. Stop shifting the responsibility and stop with your lame justifications for firing your BANG BANGS in the middle of a residential area. You do not. fire. fireworks. in. a. residential. area. I cannot fathom what you and your ilk find so hard to understand about this. It's not rocket science. It's common sense and common courtesy, which people like you clearly lack.

So I'm left to guess that in this special place fireworks were never used before?

Once again you miss the point. Maybe all that time watching the BANG BANGS has addled your brain?

Do you expect everyone to stay home with their pets so that you can fire your BANG BANGS for a few hours? Go fire your goddamned fireworks somewhere else. I know this is hard for you, but if you really strain your brain a bit you'll start to understand why your position in this debate is illogical, inconsiderate and just downright dumb.

Passing bylaws is easier said than done.
People use freedom of "religion" as a defense to oppose them when proposed.

call for a ban of trimmer or cut the grass manually with a bush knife ... your pet is that important no ? you must be constant in your views with regard to stressing the animal. I hope you have silent vacuum cleaners as well ... rofl

poorly trained animal. My dog doesnt go beserk for a weed eater. The only thing he is afraid of is thunder because he is an AM staff and has storm fright which is known for that breed

We've tried over the counter tranquilizers. None of them work

Well once again why are you mising on the welfare of your pet ? go to a vet and get the proper sedative. A pharmacy does not stock medicines for veterinary use as the physiology is different the drugs behave differently.

The very idea that the dog's reaction is the fault of the owner is just as ridiculous.

go and tell skinner and his ilk that all the science is rubbish.

It's not rocket science. It's common sense and common courtesy, which people like you clearly lack.

strange how common courtesy must be sent in one direction isnt it ?

People are letting off very big bangs here at this time while everyone is trying to sleep and pets are getting frightened.

Maybe you're missing points as I said I don't have a pet nor do I use fireworks, I am however a previous pet owner.

RiaX, wow. I generally respected your opinions, but just... wow. Do you really think I buy sedatives from a pharmacy for my dog? No I go to a vet, but you know what? Those sedatives you get from the vet, they don't work for my dog. Once those fireworks start going off he goes nuts.

Common courtesy is firing your fireworks where it doesn't bother anyone. Douchebaggery is insisting on doing it in a residential area where multiple people with pets live and then expecting everyone to be fine with it and to simply 'deal with it.'

I highly doubt they are big bangs. Nothing compared to what you could get in the 90s and no one was complaining then. The end of the day hindus have a right so just deal with it. Just like how churches have the right to have those bright neon lights on the entire night or mosques have the right to sound the call to prayer bla bla bla .... its a cultural practice in a multicultural society.
