Diwali Fireworks

RiaX, wow. I generally respected your opinions, but just... wow. Do you really think I buy sedatives from a pharmacy for my dog? No I go to a vet, but you know what? Those sedatives you get from the vet, they don't work for my dog. Once those fireworks start going off he goes nuts.

Common courtesy is firing your fireworks where it doesn't bother anyone. Douchebaggery is insisting on doing it in a residential area where multiple people with pets live and then expecting everyone to be fine with it and to simply 'deal with it.'

you cant do it in designated areas. It has a significant meaning to burst the fireworks from your house. Are you claiming that hindus must not have the right to perform their rituals ?

the whole point is to light up the night sky so the gods can come home (its a little more detailed than that but im an atheist so I dont really bother with the story nonsense)

EDIT:

what was the name of the sedative ? whats your dogs weight and breed ? and how much did you give the dog? and what time did you give the dog the sedative ?

In short, this thread is filled with people expecting everyone else to bend over backwards for them. So that's nothing new then. You'll always get douchebags and they'll always justify why they should be allowed to be douchebags.

For now, I'm going to bed.

Fireworks
How safety laws apply

In response to the high incidence of buildings being set alight, people being injured and animals frightened by exploding fireworks, the Explosives Act 26, 1956, has laid down strict safety regulations with regard to the manufacture, importation, sale and use of fireworks.

To begin with, it is unlawful to set off fireworks within 500m of any explosives magazine, explosives factory, petrol depot or gasometer, in any building or public thoroughfare or in any public place, except with the written permission of the local authority. This means that fireworks may be exploded on private property only. Furthermore, the limitations on the type and dimensions of 'legal' fireworks effectively prohibit their use.

Prohibited are any fireworks larger than 25mm x 4mm (the so-called 'lady cracker'), anything incorporating uncontrolled flight, Roman candles, any firework not made with 'black powder' and anything that 'makes a bang'. Note that while lady crackers are of an acceptable size, the fact that they make a bang also effectively rules them out.

so if you live in a flat close to a stadium must the crowd be silent on match night so you can sleep ?

Once again you miss the point. Maybe all that time watching the BANG BANGS has addled your brain?

Do you expect everyone to stay home with their pets so that you can fire your BANG BANGS for a few hours? Go fire your goddamned fireworks somewhere else. I know this is hard for you, but if you really strain your brain a bit you'll start to understand why your position in this debate is illogical, inconsiderate and just downright dumb.

Never answered my question.

A douchebag is someone who would rather argue over the internet using as little effort as possible rather than using some real effort in helping their pets

So by that token I have the right to go blow my vuvuzela in the street at 5AM every morning because it forms part of my religious beliefs?

Also, please read:

There is no religious significance to the fireworks beyond firecrackers being let off because it is thought to drive away evil spirits.

Diwali is the festival of lights, and specifically a clay lamp which is lit to symbolise the triumph of good over evil.

They're more than welcome to practice their religious beliefs, but then they should do so where it doesn't bother other people.

Now you're grasping at straws, RiaX. There is a massive difference between rockets being fired off above houses and the sounds from a stadium. Not to mention that if I didn't want to hear the stadium, I could simply have chosen a living space somewhere else.

Do you have trouble reading? My pet is fine at the moment because I live in an area with a Hindu population of 0. There's not fireworks going off. Your constant insinuations that I'm somehow currently being 'irresponsible' by not helping my pets right this very moment is as ridiculous as the rest of your arguments. My trouble only starts on New Year, when everyone decides '**** the law' and fires off fireworks on the beach here.

Carry on, troll.

If you had a brain, you'd realize I was talking about fireworks in general. When New Years comes please be prepared don't come on the forum to b***h about something YOU KNEW WAS GONNA HAPPEN!

if it was part of your religion and the state recognised your religion then yes.

As for toxicbunny's story of diwali its wrong (wikipedia is not a good source of information).

Diwali is the celebration of the triumph of good against evil. The fireworks are set of to help guide the gods home. lamps (its not a single lamp either) are lit all around the house to welcome lakshmi into your home for a prosperous new year to come. Again im still simplifying it.

Also diwali is a holy festival that transpires generally for 7 days .... the hindu community has been considerate to limit its fireworks to a day or two. Different types of hindus (tamil speaking or hindi speaking) will celebrate on different days

nope. There is no difference. Sound is sound. Its simply vibrations in the air. Also dont insult the complex biology a stupid rocket for a single evening is not enough to damage anything.

Hearing diminishes over time naturally, its quite hard to damage your hearing with audible noises.

EDIT:

so because you lived there first everyone else must bow down to your logic and ideals ? do you own ALL the airspace in your suburb ?

and you people wonder where guys like malema come from going "they must share" ....

I highly doubt they are big bangs. Nothing compared to what you could get in the 90s and no one was complaining then. The end of the day hindus have a right so just deal with it. Just like how churches have the right to have those bright neon lights on the entire night or mosques have the right to sound the call to prayer bla bla bla .... its a cultural practice in a multicultural society.

They are 10km+ away and can still hear them loudly here so yes they are and my dogs agree.

Nonsense. GO outside and watch for the displays then count. 1 ... 2 .... 3 .... that will tell you how far the blast is.

you can estimate distance as 1 kilometer per second for sound. So after you see the light start counting

hearing fireworks LOUDLY 10 kilometers away .... do you even understand how big a kilometer actually is ?

Ive been watching fireworks for a very long time and I can tell you 10 kilometers and still being loud is utter rubbish. I dont really partake in the celebrations myself as im an atheist but I do enjoy the displays

They come from Northdale area which is not viewable from here since it's behind a hill where the dewali celebrators are we don't have any in our area here.

For me to see them I would have to go to world's view to view them.

Its a bit late don't you think?

They seem to have stopped now last one went off 20 mins back

Are you willing to inform your neighbors first?

So he would have to go around the neighbourhood informing people of his "religious practices", yet when others do it he must go around finding out who is doing what then ask them to stop? Backwards logic, yet I'm not surprised judging from what you have contributed to this thread so far

well now its a bit late the fireworks stopped about 2 hours ago

then dont exaggerate

he isnt allowed to ask them to stop. Its a basic constitutional right. If his religion is rare but recognised then it would be the courteous thing to do and educate the neighbours but its not compulsory.

I highly doubt people need to be educated on diwali, christmas or ramadaan in south africa (those rich enough to live in suburbs)

EDIT:

I will stand by the idea of cultural tolerance. I defended islamic slaughter rituals and I will defend diwali. If need be I will defend christmas too if people want to run around singing and ringing bells

Stop being annoying people and loosen up and get with the festivities .... not a single anti-diwali person will start an argument of firework displays at games, opening ceremonies, inductions or new years. Like animals dont live around the damn "designated zones" ... again pseudomorality so you can feel better about yourself. How sweet yet you cant house your pet properly or get it proper medicine or even raise it correctly. Like bad parents blaming society for their failures.

Very rare for hindus to say their dogs were stressed. Ever wondered why ?

All i'm doing is pointing out is his contradictory logic - not saying whether he is right or wrong
