DJs Threads

So t other DJs doing gigs, how much should I start charging? I've been asked to do a corporate event but they asking me for a price.
I have my own sound equipment.

Any help would be grateful

Would say do your first few for free just to get the experience

Hey! I'm saving up to buy my first set of equipment to go with my Traktor software, but need some advice and suggestions on options. My budget is going to be a bit limited when starting up but as time goes by (and gigs hopefully start rolling in), I'll upgrade to better stuff.

I've been doing some research and the first thing I'm wanna buy is a DJ Controller and new laptop (only for my music collection). I have temporary access to amps, speakers and the other DJ setup components through a friend.

But anyway, the DJ controller that stood out for me is the Numark Mixtrack Pro: http://www.numark.com/product/mixtrackpro

Any experience with this system?

And suggestions of SA retailer where to purchase equipment would also be appreciated, preferably in Cape region.

Thanks in advance!

I have the Mixtrack Pro. Very good piece of equipment.

As far as stores go I can't recommend anything in the Cape, so if all fails you can order from
http://www.soundselect.co.za/p/993/numark-mixtrack-pro
or here
http://djmixclub.co.za/

I'm not sure how much Sound Select charges for delivery but DJ Mix club has free delivery

lol @ gigs rolling in
goodluck :D

(Paying) Gigs are very hard to come by unless you're connected, everyone is a DJ these days, so don't count on gigs paying off your equipment.. that said, its a really cool hobby :)

Why dont you go with the entry level Denon controller?

Yep. What is said above is true. But as will things they have they ups & downs.
There is a lot of hate in the DJ field (for laptop DJs especially). But you yourself must be prepared.
When I go out and meet other DJ's i try and get as much advice as I can, I stand behind them and watch them play.

Mmm, Denon & Pioneer are a bit expensive in my eyes. For a good reason though, I will admit the pitch control on the Numark Mixtrack Pro could do with some refinement, when practicing beatmatching I can never get BPM to match exactly all the time even when I'm looking at the screen directly. The BPM either jumps a bit higher or lower than what I want

yeah its the same with the denons pitch control really
i think its a traktor thing..

nothing wrong with playing on a laptop, its convenient, burning and labeling cds is such a mission

What would be good entry level equipment to buy to give you the equivalent of two CDJs and a mixing deck for less money? I see a lot of iSonic and ION stuff but I've heard they don't replicate vinyl very well.

theres little point in buying cdjs and a mixer these days

Well there is for me. I'm actually taking this quite serious, so I would kill for Pioneer 350 CDJs and a mixer

To answer your question about entry level equipment, going the laptop controller with a built in sound card is the way.
And if you do happen to get the money to buy a CDJ, you don't have to burn CDs. You can use timecodes to play music from your computer while using the CDJ to control the mixing. Most DJs who love the use of vinyls but dont want the carry cases go this route by using timecode vinyls e.g DJ Premier

I know, I have timecodes and an audio card.. and turntables, i havent touched my turntables since i bought the controller
But really, if you have a controller you dont have to worry about having to deal with the all too often surprise of broken equipment

also, a cdj is not any closer to vinyl than a controller, the only benefit i see is not having to lug around a controller

Haha I know the gigs are gonna be the toughest to come by. The supply and demand ratio has never been in our favor (unfortunately). I used to do it back in university through some connections I had and considering just getting back into things through those channels. Though I need a LOT of practice... Lost my touch a lil bit since then :/

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. Appreciate the help! Looking forward to the first piece!

Allen and heath Xone 4D's prices has dropped crazy fast. That with 2 simple cdj like midi controllers and you have everything you need for pro mixing.
