Doing away with private schools forms part of the Congress of SA Trade Union's social policy outlined in its economic growth path document launched this week.

"[There is an] urgent need to eliminate the three-tiered structure of the education system which features private institutions, model-C schools and ordinary public schools and to redistribute resources toward ordinary public schools in working class and poor communities," Cosatu's growth path document read.

The document proposes wide-ranging reforms of the South African economy to rescue it from its current "crisis". Social policy proposals were included, ranging from education and health to safety and security.

The education system proposed by Cosatu should be equitable, levelling the "playing field" for all pupils, and it should promote human rights, decent work and a culture of learning and teaching.

Seriously - is there a department of idiotic ideas that comes up with this kind of lunacy ?

What possible benefit could there be in abolishing private schools besides the fact that everyone will end up as stupid as the next.

Is there anybody - ANYBODY - in Cosatu or the ancyl that has a working brain cell and who is not still stuck in revolution mode !

socialism at its best. Take from the haves and give to the have-nots ... so they can destroy that as well and then nobody will have.

Seriously idiotic. This is not the first time that they have made this call. IIRC it was debated on MyBB last year as well.

Without private schools our pass rate would be more abysmal than what it currently is. Most private have a matric pass rate of about 98-100%. I see absolutely no point in this. Private schools are private businesses and are privately funded. Abolishing them makes no sense.

Is there some point or rationale to this that I just do not see?

The call to abolish private schools is seriously retarded.

There was a similar call by one of the loony organisations to abolish private schools last year and we had a fun time with responses here on MyBB.

Cosatu do have a point. To get the public schools up to the same level of private schools, is just not realistic with the current level of corruption. It is much easier to just drag everything down to nothing, than trying to fix the problems with the public schools.

I doubt the plan is to close all private schools, and their pass rates would stay the same (or improve if they're made to change from IEB to government curriculum), but I also don't see the point in this either.

I suppose they basically want to "nationalise" private schools and turn them into government schools.. and then redistribute some of their funding to poorer schools? Not a great idea but not a terrible one either, some private schools (I've heard this of SACS at least) have more money than they know what to do with. Having astroturfs and gyms etc becomes a bit excessive if most schools in the country hardly have seating and textbooks. Still wouldn't want government to touch private schools though.

Well there's a need to redistribute some resources to poorer schools for sure. What exactly is the reasoning behind thinking every private school would be destroyed or dragged down to nothing? They would most likely remain exactly how they are minus some funding.. if I understand COSATU's plan, which I definitely don't. :) And private schools are private, unfortunately other schools aren't entitled to their resources. I wonder if COSATU even know exactly how this would work.

Most if not all ANC big guns send their kids to private school. Never gonna happen

If 95% of your voters are the poor people who cant send their kids to private schools, then you say whatever makes them go YAAAAAY!

In my opinion they know their ideas are stupid and will never be implemented, it just gets them credit with their support base. Except Malema, i think he might actually be that stupid.

No that is not socialism... neither is this.

This is an attack on free thinking. We must all think like the ANC, we must all end up in the same hole.

Mugabe was raised as a Roman Catholic, studying in Marist Brothers and Jesuit schools, including the exclusive Kutama College, headed by an Irish priest, Father Jerome O'Hea, who took him under his wing. Through his youth, Mugabe was never socially popular nor physically active and spent most of his time with the priests or his mother when he was not reading in the school's libraries. He was described as never playing with other children but enjoying his own company.[12]
