Do comments sections on websites add value?

Despite the fact that you seem to be tending towards closing the comments sections.. I would like to add a vote for keeping them open.

Yes there are trolls, and yes there are racists and yes there are also uninformed but opinionated 455h01es..

But there are also a lot of concerned, well-informed, honest guys who are worth listening to (or reading actually) And most of your subscriber base falls into the latter classification.

We're also smart enough to recognise a troll when we see one, and mature enough to ignore said troll, and read and reply only to the valuable stuff.

Personally, I enjoy the comments and forums sections.. and get a lot of valuable stuff there.. So Please don't close the diamond mine just because it has some gravel in the pit.

I do not browse the forum that often, but do like scan through the articles and if a heading attracts me, I'd open the article and scan through the article while heading down to the comments to see if a more intensive read is worthwhile.

There are some trolling now and then as well as idiocracy, but this for me is at time entertaining at the narrow-mindedness and stupidity of others. Sometimes I will contribute my own narrow-minded view as it's fun. There are also a lot of intelligent and well-formed opinions in the comments which is also nice.

With all that said, taking away comments for me is the direct denying of freedom of speech and expression. Others might not see it this way and that's fine, that's their opinion and they are entitled to express this.

All I know is, I've directed people to the site through links to comments others have made mainly, not because of the forum or article content mainly. MyBB are more than welcome to take away the comments, all I know, as a user who seldomly uses the forum, I'll use it even less and won't bother with MyBB anymore. Just like I have done with other news or information sites.

I find the comments invaluable. Often worth more than the contribution of the staff writer. These comments are most of the times from the users themselves, better on par than the writer of the article. I sometimes just scan over the main article and the jump right to the comments where I find better information.

Most of the time they do. We all have opinions, and some times we want to let it all out

For people like me, it's better not to be able to comment on articles. I've realised that my opinions are quite unpopular, so I really have to think before I comment - hence why I don't have any social media accounts.
