Youtoob been suggesting a couple of live DJ shows lately and I am still not sure what they are actually doing dancing behind the desk and now and then press a button, move a slider up and down and touch the hot plate... and the really good ones do Yoga poses.... and then expert level you sing a sentence over and over again for an hour, remember the pitch knob to 12.

Are these people taking selfies?

Most just plays one electronic dance song at the same tempo and key (or complimenting key in a Camelot wheel proximity) than another song. Cueing the song on the headphones ensuring the phrases line up and mixing it in. Think about those albums with the smooth transitions between the tracks.

Hip Hop DJ's tend to be the turntablists but you get some okes who'd bring a synth, drum machine or something with.

With Generic Dj'ing it's more about selecting good songs that keeps people dancing rather than an actual musical skillset. Try making the music rather.

Been doing it for 23 years.

Modern technology has introduced ways to make mixing and beat matching much easier via the sync function.
I also think there is more of a tendency today towards playing a recorded set.

I come from the days way before technology enabled more people to become djs.

Back when I started playing Electronic Music (Psytrance) everything was done by the ear (beat matching) and all cueing of tracks had to be done manually.
I still do it in the same fashion by ear, only thing I am using these days would be setting my cue points on my tracks as it gives more time to work on track selection and vibe according to the dancefloor.

This is your modern players and they give way more functionality to open the doors for more people to become djs.

Also modern players can sync via a network switch to each other and the mixer for sync functionality.
Basically if your tracks are analyzed, you can press a button on the player and when you start the next track it will almost perfectly synchronise the beats on top of each other.Takes most of the ear to match beats away and less usage of the jog wheels.

I have to say though, being able to use a memory stick has been a blessing to not having to carry around cds.

The vinyl guys really have it having to carry crates around, but I still to this day appreciate the vinyl sound.
Very different sound on a big PA.

And 1 cdj is more expensive than a Mac pro with Ableton live installed, where you have unlimited channels, effects and rhythmic goodies since it's a fully featured daw with a nice live performer thing built in.

I never really understood why Pioneer's are so ridiculous.

I pretty much think it is due to Pioneer being the industry standard and most people know how to use them.
I have heard the question asked many times
"What model CDJ do they have up there" from different djs

I have a set of xdj 700s in my setup now for USB functionality, but owned 100's for many years.

PS. I think phones on dancefloors have also killed the "live in the moment/music" on dancefloors,
but thats a personal opinion.

Ignorance is something else.
The video you posted is Lee Burridge , yes does something , its called beat mixing.
He also produces a lot of music and plays the keyboard and guitar.
He owns a record label called " All day I dream"

95 % of the top DJs in the world all produce music and can play instruments .

you sir , on the other hand are just an ignorant idiot.

cheers
