Do DJ's actually do something?

Sorry, what exactly is the problem here?

Nothing wrong with smart business. It worked for the scantily clad popstar lip-synching a song written by a team of writers, and now it is working for thirst trap IG DJs.

But the question was what they do in a DJ sense and these specific DJs don't do much. Sure, some ability for them to get a start, but their appearances are what really sold and continues to sell them, and they have a team behind them doing the actual DJing/mixing stuff.

Isn't that mostly the whole entertainment and music industry.

let me ask @absynth the next question, do you think AI will make DJ's obsolete?
because lets face it, the beat matching they used to do is done by a machine now, what will the next thing be?

I don't think so because DJ is more than just the music. The biggest thing they do is help the crowd through ecstasy trips and entertainment.

even so, just wait till AI takes that over, I mean you can get AI generated Newscasters, and Actors,
how about going further and simply having a dude sitting at home watching via stream, pushing buttons and mixing tracks while
sitting at home drinking Pepsi.

I mean we arent talking Armin van buuren here, but even he will have to admit AI will make their job obsolete soon enough.

I think you think about it too much. There is a place for both. Just like I don't need 8tracks anymore to find a good mix and use YouTube Mixed for You., it is still nice to listen to other people's mixes.

People said the same about autotune. Now indie music industry has boomed and people don't want to listen to perfectly tuned stuff anymore. Etc. Etc.

There will be phases and then there will be phases.

Beatmatching is a secondary style thing. A good DJ plays music that pumps the crowd up. You need a AI that can read a crowd and select appropriate music. Technically it can be done but there's also a crowd feedback which works both ways. I don't think people will be as entertained if it's a computer doing the selection.

Show business is a thing btw. Even if it's all Bullsh...

Armin is a producer.

There are some scary stuff out there but AI as a sole music creation mechanism might instead boost the creativity of people a bit to remain competitive since making good music relies more on emotional elements over technical. IMO a AI needs to be sentient to be that creative and that might cause a complexity in its creation due to its own experiences that doesn't resonate with human experiences.

yes indeed - just to put it very simply the best DJ's are the people who can decide the music that suits the crowd and suits the mood that the crowd is in and can use his understanding of this to his advantage to even shift the mood of the people he is playing the music for ..... just playing a bunch of crowd favorites means that your party is over in around 2 hours and playing a bunch of brand new tracks means you will have a constantly empty dance floor - a computer or AI will use some type of algorithm to select what to play but generally it will not be able to read a crowd or the mood that those people are in ..... and this where a GOOD DJ comes in so yep what Moosedrol says is 100% correct and is an infallible fact - the party is not just a collection of random music selected as a playlist or according to BPM or just a bunch of tracks that will mix well together because they are beatmatched

sure ..... the technical aspects of beat mixing and beat matching are important tools to a DJ, but DJ'ing is far more than just getting two songs to play together or to follow each other in a way that you are not able to distinguish that they are two songs - if you assume that you are playing music for people who are wanting to have fun instead of only people in a drug fueled frenzy then you have to have the creativity as mentioned by Moosedrol and also a certain level of intelligence to be able to successfully make sure that what you are doing will basically be able to "rock a party"

To be honest i have seen DJ's that have no capability of matching beats or the knowledge to ever be able to do so doing very well and acheive a cult following just because of music selection and also having a great personality on a microphone - so being a successful DJ is much more than just being technically good at the musical aspects ..... there is far more to it than "just" mixing and IMHO one of the most important aspects is to know your crowd ..... for example if you have people who enjoy Pop and Electronica OR Techno it is pointless for example to play Reggae for them (the extremeness of difference in the genres is just to illustrate the point)

but trust me the most successful DJ's are always doing "something" and absolutely everything that they do contributes in some way to their success - the pretend guy who just relies on twiddling knobs to look busy while the electronics do everything is not ..... and never will be ...... a successful DJ ..... just my 0.02 cents

when I first saw this many moons ago it blew me away, and it still does

for context he was battling the turntablist to the left of him, and when the turntablist realised what was happening he gave up

Nope, I don't think it will as there is still needs to be the human interaction for reading the crowd and track selection.

Youtoob been suggesting a couple of live DJ shows lately and I am still not sure what they are actually doing dancing behind the desk and now and then press a button, move a slider up and down and touch the hot plate... and the really good ones do Yoga poses.... and then expert level you sing a sentence over and over again for an hour, remember the pitch knob to 12.

Are these people taking selfies?

Is the trend that most DJs are male and most of the people up front are female like in this clip?
Still not enough to get me into it......
