Do I really need an SLR camera?

Ok, I know a friend of mine does HDR photos and they look really awesome, so I would be interested to learn how to do that. Pity the D3000 doesn't offer that function.

Like my edit said - you can do it manually. It's just an ease of use thing.
 
Could someone explain to me, maybe in lamens terms, the difference between the 2 lenses that come with the D3000?

Bundle consists of: Nikon D3000 DSLR, Nikon 18 - 55mm VR lens,
and Nikon 55 - 200mm VR lens

Better image quality? Prove it. Maybe at over 800 ISO, the kit lense is way better on the Nikon(18-55VR)

Don't take me as a fanboy I'd love a Canon 450d/500d but when I was looking for a camera a few months ago it was 1000d vs d3000.

What I didn't like about the 1000d.
-Average kit lense.
-Poor cheap plastic build quality.
-Looks and feels horrible.

AFAIK it is though the most sold dSLR in the world so it can't be that bad but I hated it. Go to a shop and play with both in your hand, your choice will be easy. Never buy in a hurry just because of a special.

18-55 is your wide-angle to mid range, 55-200 is mid to telephoto.

The 55-200 zooms/ranges about 4 times as far, but its range starts where the 18-55 range ends when fully zoomed.

You won't be taking the 55-200mm to small functions. ;)
 
It's a great combo. You won't be buying new lenses for a while. :D

I see the 1000D twin combo includes a 55-250.

Ok so you are saying the D3000 is decent buy?

I have been looking around now for some time for a decent SLR, so I am not jumping into anything.

Just make sure you get the one with the VR lens, its worth the few extra rands.

Yes, it would.

You might find this interesting. Canon entry and mid-range DSLRs have a 1.6x crop factor, so the 55-250 on a non full-frame Canon body like the 1000D would zoom to 400mm. Decent range. The Nikon with the 55-200 would zoom to 300mm with its 1.5x crop factor (Nikons see a little bit more).
