Do I really need an SLR camera?

Ah ok, thanks.

What kit lens are you referring to as I have seen some deals offering:

  • Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Black)
  • Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Zoom Lens [Outfit]
  • Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 AF Lens (Canon EOS)
Canon's 18-55 is the defacto kit lens for the consumer bodies.

Remember to take the 1.6x multiplier into account when you make your choices.

Now I'm confused :erm: What is the 1.6x multiplier?

The sensors in most dslrs are smaller than those in a 35mm camera and this changes the effective focal length. A 100mm lens on a crop sensor body therefore is the equivalent of a 160mm (100mm x 1.6) lens on a 35mm slr.

I hope I got that right ;) :)

Ah thanks, yes now I'm with you. Thanks for the advice.

In your humble opinion what would a good starter lens be on the Canon's, because some say the kit lenses are rubbish, and as you said the one is defective??

Thx!

I got the Sony HX1 last week. took ages to decide on what to get and must say im happy with my choice. really great features espcially the panarama shot. also take awsome quality videos.

Despite it's flaws I'd get the canon kit simply because I cant think of a better starter lens in the same price bracket. I'd probably also get a longer 70-300 (sigma or tameron) as well as Canon's inexpensive, but truly awesome, 50mm f/1.8.

Awesome thanks bwana. I think you have confirmed what my heart was trying to tell me. :D

+1 - Look at the Canon 70-300 IS as well as the Sigma and Tameron. For the price the canon has good IQ and is a good buy. The Nifty 50 rocks too.

Canon's 70-300mm IS USM is really in a different class to the Sigma and Tamron offerings (with the possible exception of the newly announced Sigma 70-300 OS). If you can afford the Canon, go for it.

After many many months I finally got myself the Canon 550D camera and I am LOVING it!!! Thanks for all the advice.

Apart from the 18mm-55mm IS kit lens, I also got myself the EF 55-250mm IS lens and wow, what an amazing lens at this price.

What price did you pay for the 55-250mm IS lens ?
I got a 28-560mm IS lens for R3800.

Nice thing about it is that attached to the back of the lens is a Canon SX20.

I got the 55-250mm IS on promotion for R2650 and it's a Canon lens...is the 28-560mm a Canon...that's a really BIG focal range wow! Is it a lens that fits on DSLR's as well? I am very happy with what is attached at the back of my lens ;)

he's ****ing with you... it's a bridge camera with a huge focal range (20x zoom or something) :)

Enjoy the camera, I also have the 550D and the 55-250. I really enjoy the lens (contrary to many opinions around here about it :p), colour and saturation is much better then the kit lens, and pretty sharp too.

LOL - yeah mine is a bridge. These days small sensors have more pros than cons. Had a look at that 55-250mm lens and it is huge, don't think I would ever want to carry something like that with me. So how do you SLR guys deal with getting decent zoom? Like in 500mm and beyond, do you just foot it?

When I was checking out lenses I thought it might be something to think about, but now that I have this lens, it actually isn't as big and because it is the lower end version it is also much lighter so it makes for an amazing walk around lens...so I have no problem with it.

The thing that I like about DSLR's is the flexibility to change lenses and have more control over the choices that I make with the camera.

Joined here a little too late :/ But it does depend on what you're using it for.

In March this year I needed a new camera and had just over R6,000.00 to spend. For that price I could either get the SX1 IS or the 1000D EOS + kit lens. After checking out both, I went for the SX1 and couldn't be happier with my choice. I still want a dSLR - but to me the SX1 was a far better choice initially.

I can also shoot in RAW, have a CMOS sensor (3.7fps), Full HD video, 28-560mm lens, hot shoe for external flash, 1st/2nd curtain flash, AEB, full manual and quite a few 'SLR' features.

Chances are when I get my DSL, I'll still be using my SX1 in the majority of situations.

There are short comings - with the biggest (in my eyes) being the small sensor and high noise, meaning you can't really use beyond ISO 400

18 megapixels, I just crop it :p

I actually don't use tele-zoom lenses too often. Agreed, it is very handy to have with you all the time in a small package, but I did a focal range analysis of a few thousand photos taken with my Canon S5 and IIRC less than 5% is in the 250mm+ range, less than 2% in the 350mm+. So the occasional crop or foot is fine with me.

300mm on a 1.6x crop is 480mm effective. That's pretty long for a pretty compact lens. But that's adequate, not decent. Decent would be Sigma 50-500mm (can you say 10x zoom on a DSLR?). That's 80-800mm effective.

Neither do I. I rented a 70-200mm for the weekend's band shooting, and although I went out too 200mm often, that was about a head/shoulders shot from where I was standing - more than enough. I was actually wishing it to be wider on the short end.
