If i have a wifi router in my house then each desktop and laptop must have a wifi card or something in each machine for them to pick up the signal?

If I had a setup like wifi i will be able to go online with a cellphone that does have wifi in it?

could i unplug my normal adsl box and install a wifi box route and go on as if nothing has happened exept i would have to reconfigure some settings?

the reason i asked is i saw a wifi router for next to nothing on the fleamarket and thought it would be good to get it because at the moment we have cables running through the house and having a wireless thing i can get rid of the cables.

i did not buy the wifi/wireless box yet because i might not be able to install it.

Correct, but you would need, as you call it (a WIFI thingy) in each device that needs to connect to the network! :D

Yes, every PC need to have its own wifi card in

Keep in mind that you'll need to use WPA-TPIK with a good, strong passkey, but even that is cracked.

WEP is no-no.

As for a second hand router, I won't buy it, you'll never know its pedigree - best to buy a new router and start from there.

No experience with cellphone wifi, but it should work that you'll be able to connect via wifi and browse on your cellphone thusly without the need for expensive data bundles.

cool but what happens to my adsl with telkom, would i be picking wifi up from someone or somewhere else?

hold on. if i change the adsl router from one with a cable to one with an aerial i am still using my telkom bundles yet i will be wireless and not running it through a cable?

Yes. The cable is from your router back to the exchange...

Correct on the last part.

You would input your telkom details into the router. Set a wireless password (recommend 10 characters or more, using letters & numbers).

Go to pc's that have wireless & search for wireless device, input the password & away you go.

If the house is very big , lotsa walls then you might need to place a repeater in a central point so it can boost the signal.

ah hah thanks again. we might consider it once we are on our feet again but the bug bit us when my daughter was here and had a desktop gadget that she plugged into my ethernet hub and the next minute she was happily surfing without cables.
