Do student discounts apply overseas for SA students?

Pretty straightforward and (most likely dumb) question but I have a mate who's going to the states in a couple weeks and said he'd get me a macbook air...

The student discounts apple offers in the states are pretty awesome but does anyone know if a student discount for a foreign university apply? also, if the laptop has problems will Apple SA honour the warranty?

Doubt it. Doesn't it say on their website that you need a functional .edu address to claim discounts? You might be able to buy a local warranty, but I'd be surprised if anyone would care about your overseas one. We don't even have Apple in SA - only iStore and other resellers. Why would they waste their money on people who didn't purchase the product from them originally?

You can try your luck with one of those international student cards, but you might need to be there in person for the actual purchase.

Also AFAIK the warranty will be honoured locally, I'm sure PostmanPat or Sauron will elaborate further.

In Vienna and Germany my student card was honored. Not sure about the states, it should be though. Only issue would be an online portal, try and use an education e-mail (your university e-mail that ends with .ac.za) or ask to speak to a human.

They say only US institutions are eligible but I know my mother has got the discount it in the past.

I got someone to buy me a MacBook from the Apple Store in Hong Kong and a photo of my girlfriend's student card and a photo of her ID was enough for us to get the discount. They allow student discount for people buying on behalf of a student there.

Core locally won't touch it though when it comes to warranty, you will pay repair costs if something goes wrong.

Apple isn't officially in the country, they are being resold through an authorized reseller.

Really ? I had a 15" MacBook Pro 2 years ago that I had bought in Orlando FL, USA which developed a fault with the graphics card. It was well out of warranty. I took it to Apples4Apples in Durban (Apple authorised repair facility), and they took it with no questions asked....fitted a new graphics card at no cost. Gave it back to me and said don't worry, Apple will get the tab.

Apples4Apples (Apple repair centre) and CityMac (authorised Apple seller), both located in the same building in Durban, are great !

Apple provides worldwide warranties if I recall correctly. Core is just rotten when someone requests a repair.

Regarding student discount. Get an international student card. Should give you discount for most places overseas.

Bought my macbook overseas. Core fixed my problem no questions asked.
