Recently bought a Samsung 43" UHD Smart LED tv. Do we need a HD decoder to get the best quality picture? We presently have a standard decoder and pay for the DStv Premium package.

Which model decoder do you have..? Does it connect to the TV via HDMI..? If so, you will have the best quality..

Decoder: DSD1131. On the reverse of the unit we are connected via LNB IN (left) and 4 connectors (right)
with the red, white, yellow and blue plugs. Not familiar with the HDMI

The DSD 1131 is SD quality only, not DVB S2 capable so, can't receive any of the HD channels.
If you are connecting to the TV via RF or RCA, then the decoder is SD only and you will have to replace it with a new HD decoder or a PVR.
Model 6 series is the latest MC HD decoder. The 4 and 5 series may still be available. The most versatile is the 4-series if you can still get it. (DSD 4137).

The latest Explora is the 3A, the worst model MC has ever released. Try and get an Explora 2A for the best flexibility.

NB: note. The DSD 1131 implies that you have a Single Universal LNB installed in the antenna. This will also have to be replaced as the old LNB is NOT fully compatible with the newer HD decoders, an definitely not compatible with an Explora decoder.
Keep the older antenna if it is in good condition as it is probably a 90 cm one. If it is a small 60 cm, then that too needs to be replaced.
The new LNB is an SLNB model LMX 502Z. Again it is NOT the best to get. Rather get hold of an LMX 501 for flexibility.

If you live in a Complex with a centralised MUD antenna installation, then first check with the BC IF their system is compatible with the newer MC decoders.

Hi

Thanks for a very detailed post.

Could you tell me if/why the LNB would need to change if going from a 1311 to a 6s?

I connected a new 6s decoder today. Everything seems fine but it looks like it hasn't been activated yet (shows as pending on the website)

Thanks
