Does South Africa need a state owned post office?

Is postal delivery in these times obsolete or is there a genuine need for it?

Yes, to render services for other inefficient departments.
To deliver post and parcels, no, that ship has sailed and only pirates could bring it back to the dock.

Does South Africa need a state owned post office? Only if it is one that actually works. We don't need the current excuse for a postal service, but the lack of one just highlights how we could really use one that works. Courier services are expensive and not always an option.

yes, while I get all my stuff via email.... My parents dont, my father in law says he is too old to bother learning it now (hes 70, so i kinda agree)

That is the problem with state owned, they almost never works.

SAPO is useful for delivering post (envelopes) and registered post (of which I sent a lot). Would I trust them with anything else... No.

I deal a lot with people in the UK and other parts of Europe and it's embarrassing when you have to tell people not to post anything to you in South Africa because we don't have a functioning postal service and there's almost a 100% chance that whatever they want to post to you will never get to you.
