Do you remember the last whites-only referendum?

I do indeed remember...

The 1992 referendum was held in South Africa on 17 March of that year. In it, white South Africans[1] were asked to vote in the country's last whites-only referendum to determine whether or not they supported the negotiated reforms begun by State President F.W. de Klerk two years earlier, in which he proposed to end the apartheid that had been started in 1948. The result of the election was a large victory for the "yes" side, which ultimately resulted in apartheid being lifted.

I never knew that. Granted I was only 5 at the time.

We did not have many options then as our backs was against the wall with the rest of the world against us.

I went with my dad to vote in this. The polling booth was in some tannies kitchen! Even then, at 9 years the irony made me smile.

Crime has definitely gone up but I think the corruption was covered by censorship and let's be honest, the money collected serviced a much smaller percentage of the population back then.

Now the tax base is bigger but it serves even less at a worse standard it seems.
