Do you remember the last whites-only referendum?

I love pointing this fact out to racist black people I encounter, as well as how Helen Zille was the person who broke the Steve Biko story to the world. That more than often leaves them with a big blank look.

Have we had another one since then? I don't recall one? So in actuality, it's Last Referendum.

Which just goes to show, the government since 1994 doesn't actually give a toss what people want...
 
I think a lot of things have changed for the better.

The crime and corruption was always there... its just that some sectors of the public were sheltered from to.
The ANC pale in comparison to the corruption of the NATS

I kind of doubt that very much. yes the Nats were corrupt but they still tried to keep it covered up while they were skimming the cream off the milk. The ANC tried to cover it up originally but now the corruption has got so bad they don't even bother. They just taking the whole fcking milk jar

The type of corruption you are talking about back then was not the blatant corruption of today. Wrong, nonetheless.

Example: A major highway is being planned. State officials who know this, buy up the land where the road is to be built 5 years from now, and sell it back to the state at massive prices

That was after 40 years of voting for apartheid, when the country was on the brink of collapse and civil war was imminent.

Don't they have elections every five years? So they do care. Do you think people would vote any differently in a referendum?

Referenda are not held for every government decision. Usually only for major constitutional change. In Australia there has only been one in the last 24 yrs- to establish a republic (not carried).

It was just a PR stunt to save YOUR butt.

FYI,talks was already officially on,the "terrorist" parties were already unbanned, Mandela was already freed...and you still thought you voted "to end apartheid".

It was a transitional period in which De Klerk prepared whites for the inevitable.He practically saved whites from themselves,and you all should thank him.It was a
vote between change with peace or without it,either way,it was gonna happen.De Klerk effectively prevented a REAL revolution and Mandela made the biggest
mistake of his life by negotiating the God given freedom of the oppressed majority.

edit:BTW,that time there were roughly 10 million whites,2.8 million voted...it was 68% of 2.8 million,NOT the majority.

People who honestly think that things are worse now than in apartheid have no idea what true suffering and oppression is.

There should be no winners in a representative democracy. A single party cannot represent the interest of more than 50% of the population, unless the population has as much personality as a paper bag.

What exactly is the point of this thread?
