True. I "bar crashed'' a 21st two weekends ago. I just asked what was going on (The ladies were wearing pom poms and frilly dresses over their clothes) and they said it was a 21st. Asked me what I was doing standing by the bar and I said I was just chilling. Got invited over, done a few shots with the birthday girl, good time out.

My only experience of soloing is the UK & Jo'burg South. The South has a very macho vibe among the guys and it is really the only thing that makes me uncomfortable. I don't care if I am out alone, that doesn't bother me, but I do worry about having trouble come my way.
 
All the time. Best way to pull a one night stand in all seriousness. A good wing man is better than flying solo but, a good wing man is a very rare thing. Better to fly solo.

There are two types of solo flyers though. There's the jerk who is obviously insecure about being out on their own and theirs the guy who just couldn't give a ffck. You decide which it's better to be.

Scored gfs and best friends by walking into a strange pub on my own so, there's a lot to be said for it.
 
I should stipulate that flying solo in JHB is much more conducive to making friends and getting laid than for instance Port Elizabeth but, it's always fun wherever you are.
 
Thing about JHB is that a lot of Joburgers are imports so they know what it's like to be a stranger in a strange land. So, they're far more likely to welcome you to their table/clique.

That being said, once you've spent some time being being strange when you're a stranger, you get good at being man alone.

Only in the East. JHB north, fourways, midrand is a whole different story. You could finger some okes gf in gf in fourways and he'll try to talk to you about why you were wrong to do such a thing before it comes to blows. Unless, they're visiting from Boksburg. Then, you'd better hope the bouncers get there in time.

In terms of pulling and wingmen, I've only ever known one good wingman. In other cases it has just been one big unproductive distraction. Either you are all cock-blocking one another (actively or subconsciously), talking nonsense and not paying attention or dragging a drip around.

The bar is the best place in my opinion. Almost forces you to be social as people are always milling around and in a way forces them to talk to you. Go to the loo though and you are guaranteed to lose your vantage point.

I've sat at a table by myself once in a pumping restaurant/bar. That was an epic fail.

But I honestly go out to just have fun and not actively pull. It beats mashing away on PS3 remote on a Friday evening or sitting listening to your friends talk about little Johnny's first tooth. :rolleyes: I'm happy for you, but Johnny's first tooth doesn't equate to a fun evening for me.

Any areas frequented by folks from the Meyersdal, Glenvista, Bassonia, Alberton area will have problems. Especially the 18 - 23 year olds. I understand that blanketing folks is not ideal as I myself come from that area, but I know how they behave.
 
I never go out alone. The only time I drink alone, is while waiting for someone when I'm early. I have gone to restaurants alone, but this was because I was out of town for work and stayed in a lodge. No choice there, and it wasn't too bad. Ordered my food, ate, and left.
 
I don't mind going to a pub on my own as there will probably be people around I know. Night clubs not really and definitely not restaurants at night although I have on a few occasions when travelling for work but so were the other people. I'm quite happy to go sit down at a restaurant table outside on the deck overlooking the sea for lunch though.
